The Role

Reporting to the Manager Technical Services, the purpose of this position is to champion the establishment and integration of TasPorts Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and ensure it provides a range of business benefits through the collection, analysis and sharing of spatial information to better inform decision making. 

Key areas of focus for this role and the GIS include: 

  • Optimising asset & property portfolio management activities through accurate spatial mapping of data
  • Reducing Health & Safety risks associated with working near subsurface infrastructure
  • Enhancing environment management compliance

 The GIS software used at TasPorts includes Esri ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online, along with FME Flow and Form.

This role can be based at either the Hobart, Launceston or Devonport TasPorts' offices. 

Key role responsibilities  

  • Champion the establishment of TasPorts' GIS, through development, integration, and management of the Enterprise GIS across the business.
  • Train people in the use of the GIS and encourage them to consider further opportunities to extend the GIS to support their business functions.
  • Working with relevant stakeholders, develop and implement processes to update and maintain relevant spatial information, and ensure the GIS remains fit for purpose.
  • Facilitate the integration of asset spatial information with the asset management information system.
  • Leverage the capabilities of FME Flow and Form to automate data management workflows.
  • Collaborate with service locators to ensure location information for electricity, water, communications, and other services are accurately captured and updated into the GIS in a timely manner.
  • Investigate and implement opportunities to integrate with other information and business systems to fully leverage the benefits of the GIS.
  • Establish data standards and guidelines to ensure consistency and efficiency in the flow of information into the GIS.

What you can bring to the role

We are looking for a self-motivated and positive team player with excellent communication skills who thrives in a diverse and busy role!

We take a flexible approach to the skillsets candidates have, and prefer someone with strong learning mindset, quick-thinking and ability to solve and assimilate data rapidly in order to present solutions to difficult day-to-day incidents as required; can work collaboratively and have an ability to think outside the box. 

What you can bring to the role

  • Demonstrated experience and solid understanding of GIS and spatial data principles.
  • Experience in contemporary GIS software (Esri ArcGIS Pro strongly preferred), including cloud-based service offerings (Esri ArcGIS Online preferable).
  • Experience in automating data workflows using FME Flow and Form is preferable.
  • Experience integrating GIS with contemporary asset management information system software would be advantageous.
  • Experience planning and coordinating site data capture works, including working with service locators to improve subsurface asset knowledge.
  • Experience coordinating spatial data quality improvement programs.
  • Experience working with CAD drawings (strongly preferred) and Building Information Modelling (desirable).

You will possess the skills and abilities to undertake a high level of complex administrative and technical task, and you will utilise a high level of communication and stakeholder liaison skills as well as organise, schedule, and prioritise your own area of responsibility. 

Experience in a shipping or marine operations environment would be deemed an advantage, however not essential. 

What you will have

Essential

  • Ability to obtain and hold a Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC)

Desirable

  • A tertiary qualification in a relevant field such as Geomatics, Information Technology, Science, or equivalent experience.
  • Esri Technical Certification or equivalent.
  • Association with the Geospatial Council of Australia or equivalent.
  • Current drivers licence.
