Our teamJoin the dedicated team at the National Location Information Branch within Geoscience Australia, where we are at the forefront of ensuring Australia's national location information is accessible, trusted, reliable, interoperable, relevant, and sustainably managed. As part of this team, you will contribute to the Digital Atlas of Australia project, one of three major location-based initiatives that are transforming how we interact with and understand geographic data.
The Digital Atlas of Australia project brings together, curates and connects trusted national datasets from across government into an interactive, secure, and easy-to-use online platform. Anyone, anywhere can explore, analyse and visualise data on Australia's geography, people, economy and environment.

The key duties of the position include:The roleWe are seeking several highly skilled GIS Analysts to join the Geoscience Australia team and play a pivotal role in curating and publishing location data. As a GIS Analyst, you will utilise your expertise in GIS software, data management, analytics, and data quality assurance to ensure the accuracy, accessibility, and usability of spatial datasets. Working within the ArcGIS Enterprise and ArcGIS Online systems, you will be responsible for publishing web services and applications to deliver accurate and accessible spatial data for impactful decision-making and analysis.
The primary responsibility of this role includes;
Utilising GIS software such as ArcPro, ArcGIS Online, FME, or similar systems to manage and analyse spatial data.
Organise, clean, integrate, and transform spatial data layers and attribute tables effectively.
Apply spatial analysis techniques like buffering, overlay analysis, and geoprocessing operations for data preparation and analysis.
Developing web services within GIS platforms like ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Enterprise and implement service publishing workflows.
Implement data quality control measures, error detection, and validation processes to ensure high-quality spatial datasets.
Creating procedural documentation, metadata, and user guides, and collaborating effectively with team members and stakeholders.
Creating applications and maps, spatial overlays, and visualisations to represent the data with the Digital Atlas Australia effectively.
Providing technical support and assistance to users, including troubleshooting software issues, answering inquiries.
To be successful in the role you will have:
Have strong analytical skills to interpret spatial data, perform various spatial analysis techniques, and derive meaningful insights from geographic information.
A thorough knowledge of data management principles, including data acquisition, cleaning, manipulation, and storage, is crucial.
Create clear and visually appealing maps and visualisations is important. Understanding cartographic principles and design aesthetics enhances the effectiveness of conveying spatial information to stakeholders.
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think critically are essential for devising effective approaches to address these challenges.
Being meticulous and paying attention to detail is crucial for ensuring data accuracy, quality, and precision in GIS analysis, web service and map creation.
Excellent communication and negotiation skills and the ability to collaborate with a diverse cross-section of stakeholders.
Required skills, knowledge, experience and/or qualifications Our ideal applicant will have a combination of technical skills, strategic thinking and effective communication abilities:
Proficiency in GIS software and tools (in particular Esri Web GIS and Esri Desktop suite as well as FME)
Previous experience in data publication and web service creation is highly desirable.
