THE POSITION
This challenging position will operate Heavy Plant such as an excavators, trucks, rollers backhoes and skid steer loaders, and operates a variety of other small to medium sized plant and equipment, to assist in the safe and efficient construction and maintenance of Council’s drainage infrastructure.
Reporting to the Team Leader (Drainage) you will:
  • Receive and act on written work orders or verbal instructions from the Maintenance Works Coordinator, Drainage Team Leader or other assigned supervisor.
  • Operate Heavy Plant such as an excavator, backhoe, skid steer loader, rollers, trucks or similar to construct or maintain Council infrastructure, with a focus on road drainage infrastructure. This includes open drains and culverts.
  • Estimate the quantities and weights of loose materials such as soil, rock and gravel, and loads the correct quantities and weights of materials onto trucks, trailers or other locations.
  • Correctly install, extend or repair pipes, box culvert units and headwalls including placing, joining, backfilling and grouting of precast products.
  • Perform routine day-to-day inspections, cleaning, maintenance and repairs to assigned plant and equipment to maximise the reliable and useful life of machines and their accessories, including checking and changing all oil levels, lubricating parts, changing filters, checking hydraulic fluids, etc. Assists Council's workshop staff with major services and repairs as required
  • Ensure that all work conforms to required safety standards, including completion of risk assessments and site specific training for employees / contractors, installation and maintenance of signage, and implementation of Work Method Statements and Traffic Control Plans.
  • Participate in staff meetings, essential training and overtime / call out work as required.
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Specifically, you will have:
Essential
  • Current Class MR Drivers Licence (Medium Rigid)
  • Demonstrated ability to competently operate Heavy Plant to excavate, level, shape and compact work sites and trenches
  • Ability to read and comprehend written instructions and procedures and accurately complete maintenance records and other routine forms
  • Ability to accurately estimate the quantities and weights of loose materials such as soil, rock and gravel, and load the correct quantities and weights
  • An understanding of basic mechanical principles and the ability to perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on plant and equipment
  • Essential qualifications and licenses sufficient to enable operation of relevant Heavy Plant on work sites
  • Safe Work NSW WHS General Construction Induction (White Card)
Desirable
  • Demonstrated ability to use levelling equipment to set out levels to the standards and specifications given in engineering plans
  • Class HR Drivers License (Heavy Rigid)
  • Certificates/accreditations in:
  • Dogman’s Certificate of Competence
  • Work Safely Near Powerlines UETTDREL14Traffic Controller
  • Implement Traffic Control Plans
  • Chainsaw Operations (Cross Cutting)
  • Chemical Use
