At Austral Fisheries we pride ourselves on being a leader in Commercial Fishing. Our fleet plays a critical role in delivering top-quality seafood, and we're seeking two dedicated GraduateFleet Engineers to ensure our vessels are operating at their best.
The Northern Prawn Fishery Graduate Fleet Engineers will join us in Cairns and gain hands on experience that will shape their careers.
Graduate Engineers will be responsible for supporting the refit and maintenance of Austral’s Cairns fleet of 11 commercial fishing vessels. This will be carried out by ensuring compliance with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority’s requirements for domestic commercial fishing vessels. This role involves supporting the management of the efficient and effective execution of each vessel’s maintenance, servicing, and refit programs to ensure all vessels are seaworthy and allow operations to run smoothly.
- Ensuring vessel compliance: maintaining compliance documentation, including engineer logbooks and maintenance records.
- Coordinating and conducting vessel maintenance: assisting our Fleet Engineers with the management and planning of survey refits including organising contractors.
- Delivering support to our vessels at sea during seasons: resolving vessel breakdowns by guiding At Sea Engineers remotely and occasionally travelling to conduct repairs at sea or other ports.

We encourage candidates from all backgrounds and experience levels to apply, however there are some key things we are looking for.
- Knowledge about the engineering of vessels through a trade or university-level degree (essential)
- Passion for all things Marine Engineering/ Maritime operations
- Demonstrated strong computer literacy skills (Microsoft 365 suite- Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Some first-hand at-sea experience to understand the challenging environment we operate in (recreational or commercial).
- Ability to work outside normal working hours and under pressure in fast-paced environments.
- Team player mindset and a can-do attitude
- An ability to promote and uphold a strong safety culture within the business.
