Job description

(Level A) $75,888 to $102,040 per annum plus an employer contribution of 17% superannuation applies.

Fixed term, full time position available for 24 months.

We are looking to employ a full-time postdoctoral researcher for a research project funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) in the field of genetic epidemiology/statistical genetics. This is a 2-year position, with the possibility of extension subject to satisfactory performance.

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and applying statistical and computational approaches to interrogate large-scale genomic datasets to identify genes, proteomic markers and pathways underlying treatment response, resistance and side effects in patients with psychiatric disorders. The primary focus will be on the development of polygenic scores in large datasets, including in the UK Biobank (N=500,000), US All of Us Program data (N~1 million), and ConLiGen Consortium (N~3,000) data. There is also interest in developing multi-trait polygenic scores and using them across a wide range of complex phenotypes.

Specific activities include:

  • Develop polygenic scores and integrate them with other omics and clinical datasets to predict treatment outcomes in patients with psychiatric disorders.
  • Apply statistical models, e.g. using machine learning techniques, to improve the accuracy of predictions for polygenic risk scores in psychiatric patients.
  • Conducting quantitative genomic analyses of complex traits using various genomics and omics data sources such as the UK Biobank and the US All of Us Program.
  • Conducting genome-wide association studies (GWAS), transcriptome-wide association studies (TWAS), proteomics analyses, follow-up analysis, and interpreting research findings while preparing manuscripts for publication in scientific journals.

To be successful you will need:

  • A PhD (or near completion of PhD) in genetic epidemiology/epidemiology, statistics/biostatistics, computer science, computational biology, Quantitative Genetics, bioinformatics, or a closely related quantitative data-intensive field.
  • Demonstrated computational skills and experience in R, Python, Jupyter, Notebook, and genetic/genomic tools (e.g., PLINK2, GCTA, MR, FUMA).
  • Experience with big data analytics within Linux and cloud computing environments, and with data integration across multi-omics data.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with a publication track record relative to the opportunity.
  • Strong communication & writing skills.

This position requires a valid National Police Clearance Check.
