Founded in 1952, the family owned Paspaley Pearls Group (PPG) is now a diverse assembly of companies employing over 900 people nationally. Whilst Paspaley’s core business is in pearling, including pearl production, wholesale and retail, it also has large holdings in agriculture and extensive involvement and interests in marine engineering fabrication and maintenance, aviation, hospitality and resort style accommodation, as well as commercial property ownership and development.
About the role
This role is both “hands-on” and “strategic” in nature and reports directly with the Group’s COO and includes working with the Group’s leadership teams to continuously improve the Group’s WHSE systems and performance.
The role requires active, on-site liaison and a “hands-on” pragmatic approach to assisting the Group’s business units with WHSE strategy, compliance and assurance, including facilitating and conducting audits, reviews, training and consultation, and where required, assisting with critical incidents and liaising with regulatory authorities.
The successful candidate must be an experienced and enthusiastic manager of people, with excellent administrative skills who is able to demonstrate their previous experience in implementing and managing compliance and assurance systems to support diverse businesses across multiple locations around Australia. While the role has a strong focus on WHS compliance it also includes supporting the Group’s Environmental performance management.
The Group Manager - WH&S’s role requires strong interpersonal skills (high degree of emotional intelligence), a sense of humour and someone who can confidently engage with all levels of employees and stakeholders, including regulatory authorities to enable effective working relationships.
Key responsibilities:
- Overall responsibility for providing specialist advice and management for the systematic and structured establishment, implementation and assurance of management systems for Work Health, Safety and Environment (WHSE) for Paspaley’s operations in Australia.
- Manage the WHSE compliance systems including establishing objectives, policies and procedures, incident reporting and investigation, HAZID, risk management and selection of control measures, oversight of Corrective Action Registers, audits and other assurance tools.
- Assist and oversee external accreditation and certification requirements.
- WHSE analysis.
- Provide leadership, training, coaching and support to the business units to enable their efficient WHSE compliance and assurance.
- Help to create a positive culture by role modelling their practice values and behaviours.
- Proactively advise the Executive Team and business unit General Managers on the emerging issues of WHSE compliance and assurance relevant to the Group’s goals and evolving needs.
Experience, skills and qualifications:
- Tertiary qualified.
- Proven ability to develop, drive and implement WHSE (or similar) management systems.
- Extensive WHSE management experience at both operational and strategic levels.
- Capable of working within an organisation with a centralised structure servicing several diverse but independent business units, involved in a variety of different industries at several locations including remote sites.
- Experience in leading change and continuous improvement, through good policy and preventative strategies.
- Experience in providing advice and guidance to stakeholders across various departments and industries.
- Highly developed ability to communicate in both written and oral forms.
- Excellent administrative and MS Office suite skills.
- Understanding and knowledge of WHSE laws and regulations, and best WHSE practices.
- Highly self-motivated and proactive approach with the flexibility to deal with a diverse range of challenges, while maintaining integrity and compliance with WHSE Legislation & Regulations.
- An unrestricted driver’s license – current at all times.
- Must be an Australian citizenship or a permanent resident with full work rights.
The ability to travel Australia wide and to remote work locations is a key component to be successful in the role, as well as being a flexible team player who is able to establish rapport quickly at all organisational levels, drive strategic delivery to compliment a complex and diverse operation.
