Rombola Family Farms encompasses over 4,000 hectares of intensive irrigated horticultural production at Griffith (NSW), Bundaberg (QLD) and Mataranka (NT). Agricultural enterprises include Seedless Watermelon, Rockmelons, Broccoli, Pumpkin, Almonds and Winegrapes. Operations include primary production, processing, value adding and marketing.
We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Rockmelon/Pumpkin Grower to join our team in Mataranka, NT. The Grower is responsible for all aspects of produce cultivation, from planting and nurturing to harvesting and packaging. Supported by in-house industry agronomy and irrigation personnel, implementation of crop management practices will be key to increase produce yield and succeed in this role.
This position will suit someone who has prior experience as an agronomist.
Key accountabilities include:
- Monitor the agreed production schedule to ensure all tasks are completed in line with agreed timing and quality standards for all plantings to be able to produce the required outcome.
- Plan and oversee the cultivation of rockmelon and pumpkin crops from planting to harvest and ensure they are in accordance with quality standards and market requirements.
- Prepare soil for planting and ensure proper fertilization and nutrient management.
- Actively and effectively communicate with outsourced agronomists and consultants.
- Supervise and train farm workers as needed.
- Oversee and assist where required with harvesting operations.
- Implement irrigation systems and monitor water levels to maintain optimal soil moisture.
- Monitor crop health and identify and address any issues related to pests, diseases, or nutrient deficiencies.
- Coordinate with farm managers to develop planting schedules and manage crop rotation.
- Maintain accurate records of crop yields, expenses, and other relevant data.
To be successful in the role you will possess the following:
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in a management capacity within the horticulture industry.
- Proven experience in rockmelon and/or pumpkin cultivation.
- Strong knowledge of agronomy principles and crop management techniques.
- Good with numbers: analysing trends, calculating water and nutrition budgets.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Physical ability to perform tasks related to crop cultivation, including bending, lifting, and operating farm equipment.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- A valid driver's license and reliable transportation is essential.
- Familiarity with agricultural machinery and equipment.
- Skilled at crop health, production planning and pest and disease management.
- Knowledge of best practices for soil preparation, planting, and crop maintenance
- Strong understanding of irrigation techniques and water management
- Tertiary qualifications in Agriculture will be highly regarded.
- Attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Ability to adapt to changing weather conditions and work environments.
- Flexibility to work long hours and weekends during peak seasons.
- Sound working knowledge of WH&S requirements.
