AddressGoalball Australia is the national governing body for the Paralympic sport of Goalball. Goalball
Australia is a member of Blind Sports Australia, which is the parent National Sporting Organisation
(NSO). Goalball is a completely unique, dynamic team sport of skill, speed and accuracy for
athletes with a vision impairment. The sport was created in 1946 after World War II in an effort to
rehabilitate and keep veterans with blindness and low vision active. Goalball first appeared at the
Paralympics at the 1976 Games in Toronto and has been played at every Paralympics since.
Goalball is the original team sport for blind and low vision athletes in the Paralympic Games. The
Australian Men have not made the Paralympics since Sydney 2000, with their best result being
fourth in Atlanta 1996. The Australian Women have attended the past 3 Paralympics in London,
Rio & Tokyo, however they have missed out on qualifying for Paris 2024. For both squads, with
the 2032 Brisbane Paralympic Games looming, now is an exciting time to lead and develop these
talented squads of emerging athletes to take on the world.
Goalball Australia seeks expressions
of interest in the following 2 positions:
- Head Coach, Australian Men’s Goalball Team
- Head Coach, Australian Women’s Goalball Team
Nature of Positions:
These are voluntary positions, with costs of travel and expenses incurred with the attendance at
training camps and international events covered by the program. As a guide, the expectation is
that there would be around 6 training camps per year (weekend camps, including potentially
traveling interstate on the Friday evening to attend the camps) and 2 overseas trips per year which
would likely range from 1-2 weeks in duration.
Primary Job Purpose
As Head Coach of the Women/Men, you will lead the planning and execution of the Australian
Women’s/Men’s Goalball Team High Performance Program. You will be supported by an
Assistant Coach and a Program Manager, both of whom you will appoint in consultation with
Goalball Australia.
Key Performance Areas & Responsibilities
- Develop a roadmap that, when successfully implemented, gives the Team every chance of qualifying for the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympic Games.
Included in the roadmap will be a goal to qualify for the 2026 IBSA World Championships & 2027 IBSA World Games. - Monitor and support Individual Athlete Performance Plans (IAPP) on the Athlete Management System (AMS), inclusive of goals and technical, tactical, physical and psychological development areas for individual development.
- Plan and run National Training camps for the squad on a regular basis (6 times per year as a guide) and target and organise international training/tournaments (ideally twice per year).
- Appoint and chair selection committees for selecting players for international tournaments, based on agreed selection criteria.
- Provide written reports to Goalball Australia within 28 days of the completion of Training camps and tournaments.
- Provide budgets for approval in a timely manner and all receipts and expenses within 28 days of Training camps and tournaments.
- Create a positive, high performance learning environment and culture.
- Always prioritise the welfare and safety of the athletes, support staff and volunteers.
- Develop a pathway for emerging athletes to join the Women’s/Men’s squad.
- Unique athlete development frameworks to progress and evaluate athlete skill progressions that are aligned with What It Takes To Win (WITTW).
