Humphris Nursery is a large, evolving commercial nursery, based in Mooroolbark, with a retail facility and four plant production sites located throughout the beautiful Yarra Valley. Head Grower - The Opportunity:
Reporting to the General Manager, the Head Grower will manage all aspects of daily growing, with an overall objective of the right plant, at the right time, at the right quality, at the right cost! The Head Grower is responsible for working with each Site Grower to implement and manage growing programs across our varied growing conditions from field growing to high tech indoor growing environments. The role involves high attention to process detail, the ability to stay calm under pressure, the ability to engage and lead a diverse team, and a willingness to drive continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities of this role include:
- Overseeing the growth and health of plants, ensuring optimal conditions for all stages of plant development.
- Advising on all aspects of plant health as required including pest and disease, feeding regimes and water management.
- Implementing integrated pest management and sustainable practices to ensure plant health and quality.
- Collaborating with other departments to maintain optimum plant health right up to the point of delivery to customers.
- Identifying and implementing continuous improvement opportunities in both horticultural practices and operational processes.
- Training and mentoring staff on best horticultural practices, safety protocols, and the latest industry standards.
- Monitoring and adjusting environmental controls, such as irrigation and climate systems, to optimize plant growth conditions.
- Ensuring compliance with industry regulations and certifications, maintaining high standards of plant quality and safety.
About You:
You will have experience with the plant growing process, ideally working with varying crops and plant family types. Your experience will also ideally be backed up by relevant science or agricultural qualifications. As a calm critical thinker able to manage competing priorities, you will take pride in your work, enable your team, and demonstrate accuracy and attention to detail in performing your duties. Being a well-rounded leader with a positive, hands-on attitude, you communicate and work effectively with all levels in the business.
