Job description

The Head of Fundraising and Philanthropy is a key leadership role at the RFDS and an active ambassador for our service in the Western Australian community. This role is accountable for developing and achieving a growth strategy for Fundraising and Philanthropy to support the RFDS in our mission to provide excellence in aeromedical and primary health care in regional Western Australia. Key Fundraising and Philanthropy programs at RFDS include bequests, major gifts, individual giving, community Fundraising and donor stewardship. The Head of Fundraising and Philanthropy plays an important part in upholding the trusted reputation of the RFDS among donors and the community.

  • Significant experience relevant to this position
  • Experience leading a team of professional fundraisers 
  • Degree qualification in a relevant discipline
  • Experience building strong strategic relationships 
  • A strong communicator who engages effectively with a broad range of stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, execute and evaluate an integrated, comprehensive strategy
  • Think and act strategically, exercising sound judgement
  • A strong understanding of contemporary fundraising, philanthropy, community engagement and related concepts.

About the role

  • Develop, execute and evaluate a long-term growth strategy.
  • Be accountable for the success and governance of all fundraising activities and programs. 
  • Help lead stakeholder engagement within the Community Relations team for the benefit of RFDS.
  • Lead all aspects of the philanthropic cycle including donor acquisition, prospect cultivation, and stewardship.
  • Lead and manage a team.
  • Support RFDS WO to achieve its strategy through successful fundraising, philanthropy and community engagement.
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with community supporters, partners, auxiliaries, RFDS Federation and RFDS Sections to support our service.
  • Work with other RFDS teams to identify funding requirements and develop compelling cases for support.
  • Represent RFDS at a range of events.
  • Ensure Fundraising and Philanthropy adheres to the highest ethical standards and relevant legislation (including the Privacy Act and ACNC regulations) and demonstrate the highest standards of personal integrity.
  • Manage budgets and reporting.

About Us

The mission of the Royal Flying Doctor Service (Western Operations) is to provide excellence in aeromedical and primary health care across Western Australia. Every member of the RFDS WO team contributes to that mission and living our values of showing respect, demonstrating fairness, utilising diversity and being safe. Every year, the RFDS WO provides urgent retrieval for about 10,000 patients in regional WA. A further 10,000 appointments are provided in primary healthcare clinics in remote communities, including GP, nurse, dental and mental health care. RFDS crews are committed to providing the finest care to the furthest corners of the State, using the highest standards of clinical care, aviation safety and technology to make a difference to people living and working across WA – the largest and most remote health jurisdiction in the world.

The RFDS in WA operates five bases in Perth, Broome, Port Hedland, Kalgoorlie and Meekatharra. Our 24/7 operations centre at Jandakot Airport coordinates complex logistics for patient retrievals and clinics across the State. We work in partnership with government, business and the community, and are proud to work on Country with Aboriginal medical services and many local service providers.

In 2024, the RFDS is launching a new five-year strategy ‘Above and Beyond’, which will mark an important new chapter in the long Flying Doctor history. The strategy will include a focus on expanding remote health clinics in some of WA’s most vulnerable communities, expanding our profit-for-purpose services, strengthening our workforce, harnessing technology and addressing our environmental sustainability.
