Iona College is inspired by the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the life of St Eugene de Mazenod. Iona is an independent Catholic Boys School, owned and administered by the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate. It is located in the Brisbane Bayside suburb of Lindum and caters for 1,750 students from Years 5 to 12 inclusive.
Iona College is seeking a skilled and passionate practitioner to be employed as our Head of Health and Physical Education, commencing in Term 2, 2024. Located in the Faculty of Science and Health, this role will support the strategic growth and vision of the College to empower all members of the community to make a positive difference throughout their lives and the lives of others.
As a curriculum leader within the College, this role promotes and coordinates effective strategies and programs that are based on contemporary learning and teaching research. This is relevant to the development of assessment procedures in-line with State and National requirements. The role is key in coordinating and developing the curriculum documents, assessment, moderation processes and other projects as assigned by the Head of Faculty.
As the successful candidate you will be required to:
- Coordinate the development of curriculum documents according to ACARA and QCAA for the subjects within Health and Physical Education;
- Lead the coordination of assessment and moderation processes which includes the maintenance of appropriate records;
- Assist with the leadership support and pastoral care of staff within the Health and Physical Education Department;
- Take responsibility for the management of material resources and accounting for the expenditure of allocated funds within the Health and Physical Education Department;
- Have a demonstrated commitment to spiritual and Catholic education;
- Create a learning environment which stimulates interest in learning, promotes excellence and which acknowledges the needs of students to be both understanding, challenged and given support; and
- Model exemplary classroom practice when tailoring adjusted learning/ differentiated programs for students across a diverse range of abilities and needs.
To be considered for this role you should:
- Have experience in middle to senior years including holding a role with QCAA (endorser, confirmer and marker).
- Have an understanding of an inclusive model of learning with a wellbeing lens;
- Hold a Certificate IV in Training and Assessing and the ability to teach Certificate III in Fitness and/or Certificate III in Sport and Recreation;
- Have a demonstrated commitment to Catholic education;
- Be an effective communicator with all stakeholders;
- Be able to demonstrate exemplary teaching practice;
- Have strong relationship skills and be able to develop teaching processes in collaboration with other staff;
- Have the ability to interpret student performance data;
- Possess a robust knowledge of behaviour management processes and tools to support the academic performance and Visible Wellbeing of students;
- Hold a bachelors' degree in education or equivalent qualifications; and
- Provide copies of relevant qualifications and evidence of current Queensland Teachers Registration (QCT) or eligibility to apply.

This role is a Position of Leadership (PoL) Level 2 within the Catholic Employing Authorities Single Enterprise Collective Bargaining Agreement for Religious Institute Schools of Queensland.
The role holder will be appointed within a fixed-term four yearly cycle in line with the Middle Leader (PoL – Position of Leadership Structure) within the EBA. As a result of where the College is at in the four yearly cycle, this position will initially be appointed until the end of 2026 and sit as a higher duties arrangement above a base Teacher permanent, full-time contract of employment.
