YOUR ROLE IN OUR FUTURE
We are seeking a 0.67EFT Consultant Psychiatrist to head the Psychiatry service at Peter Mac.
The Head of Psychiatry position leads a team of Consultant Psychiatrist (1.3 EFT in addition to the Head role), Psychiatry Registrars (2.0 EFT) and Hospital Medical Officers (2.0 EFT).
The psychiatry team is part of the Psychosocial Oncology Program and works closely with our Mental Health Nursing and Psychology Team.
The Psychiatry team provide mental health services to people with cancer and their families including both inpatients and outpatients as well as primary and secondary consultation.

  • Oversee the operational management and strategic direction for the Psychiatry service, ensuring sound clinical governance is in place.
  • Responsible to ensure psychiatry services at Peter Mac are supported by providing strong and effective leadership in clinical service delivery, teaching and research.
  • Contribute to a vibrant research programme and enhance the stature of the institute.
  • Coordinate psychiatry education, ensuring adequate training and supervision of medical students, hospital medical officers and psychiatry trainees.
  • Provide clinical support to members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Work closely in collaboration with the Head of Psychology and Mental Health Nursing under the direction of the Director of Psychosocial Oncology as a valued contributor to the Psychosocial Oncology Programme (POP).

Position Summary

Education
Skills
Essential Requirements:
  • Medical Qualifications registrable by AHPRA
  • Specialist post graduate qualifications in psychiatry including FRANZCP
  • Experience in consultation-liaison psychiatry
  • Experience managing a team or service
  • Ability to establish and maintain good interpersonal relationships with medical staff and other disciplines
  • Demonstrable relevant experience in research and teaching in undergraduate and postgraduate levels
  • Valid Working With Children Check
Desirable Requirements:
  • Experience and post-graduate qualifications in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, specifically oncology
  • RANZCP Certificate of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry
  • Academic standing: PhD, Masters or other postgraduate qualifications and/or profile including 1st author in peer reviewed publications and presentations

1. Clinical
  • Leads and supports delivery of high-quality treatment for referred patients and their families.
  • Assists other specialists on planning and delivery of multi-modal treatment
  • Continuously reviews and improves quality processes and protocols
  • Maintain a clinical load appropriate to the level of position and other responsibilities inherent in the role
  • Actively and regularly participates in peer review patient-related activities
  • Attendance at relevant multidisciplinary meetings
  • Responds to referrals within an appropriate time frame

2. Educational
  • Either through direct participation or delegation contributes to hospital wide educational programs, including affiliated organisations' programs

  • Ensures appropriate supervision of psychiatric registrars
  • Provides education and guidance to healthcare professionals managing and supporting young people with cancer within Peter Mac
  • Contributes to case conferences, peer review meetings and seminars
Research
  • Provide a leadership role in the development Of Psychiatry research
  • Develop and communicate a research strategy for Psychiatry
  • Publishes work in appropriate journals and publications
