Job description
About the Organisation
The Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) is an independent rule maker and advisor for the National Electricity Market, natural gas market and related retail markets. It facilitates rule changes, carries out reviews and provides the nation’s Energy Ministers with advice on the design of regulatory and energy market arrangements. The AEMC is developing the right market settings to improve Australia's future productivity and living standards by contributing to a decarbonising, affordable and reliable energy system for consumers, through the transition and beyond.
The AEMC attracts exceptionally talented and purpose-driven professionals committed to delivering the best outcomes for consumers as a new energy future evolves. People are the key to the success of the AEMC’s strategy, and the organisation continues to invest in their capability and wellbeing.
About the Opportunity
Reporting to the Executive General Manager, Networks & Technical, the Head of Technical provides expert technical advice to the Commission, Chief Executive and project teams on current and emerging trends and issues as they relate to power systems engineering and their impact on the transitioning energy market. This advice and expertise will guide the policy teams to enable practical decisions and the delivery of high-quality advice to key stakeholders. You will also work closely with the Technical Advisory Panel – leveraging external specialist support and expertise.
Other responsibilities include leading the development of internal capability across technical concepts and power systems engineering to further enhance the AEMC’s ability to provide thorough and consistent technical advice and analysis as a critical guiding component of the AEMC’s decision-making and delivery.
You will also represent the AEMC as a thought leader, building and maintaining external relationships with key partners including academics, industry participants and other market bodies.
About You
Candidates will need extensive experience in a technical role in power systems, ideally gained in the energy sector, and with a strong understanding of national energy markets and the practical application of engineering concepts. This experience will be underpinned by relevant tertiary qualifications in engineering – power systems engineering is especially desirable. As well as deep technical skills, this key role will require highly advanced critical analysis and problem solving skills, the proven ability to collaborate both internally and externally, the ability to adapt technical concepts to non-technical audiences and highly developed relationship building capability.
Above all, the AEMC values leaders who can develop and motivate teams to foster and support informed debate on energy market development, engaging with governments, consumers and market participants to promote dialogue and understanding.
