Step back in time and lose yourself in the golden history of the Hou Wang Temple and Museum in Atherton, Tablelands Region. The Temple and Museum was built in 1903 and is one of the oldest original Chinese temples in Australasia.  Acquired by the National Trust in 1979, Hou Wang Temple and Museum plays its part in the mission of the National Trust: to protect, conserve, and celebrate the Environmental, Built and Cultural heritage of our State.

As we continue to welcome visitors and to educate students and visitors about Queensland’s rich history, we are seeking a motivated and passionate Casual Heritage Site Coordinator to ensure a memorable visitor experience and to oversee property care and volunteer teams at this Heritage Site.

About the Role

As our highly organised Heritage Site Manager you will provide a positive a memorable visitor experience and lead our dedicated property volunteers.  As an experienced people manager, you will guide and support the volunteers to deliver a knowledgeable and friendly visitor experience and to care for and effectively showcase the heritage property and its collection items.                                   

Supported by NTAQ Heritage Corporate Services Teams and reporting to the Head of Heritage and Environmental Services, as Heritage Site Manager you will work collaboratively to introduce new business ideas and streams, support marketing the site, and coordinate volunteer activities including training and recruitment. In this diverse role, you will also provide day-to-day support of operating the Heritage Site including coordination of property maintenance.  This is a casual role, and hours and days are not confirmed but there will be at least a minimum of 24+ hours per week. 

As a highly autonomous individual, and confident public speaker, you will actively engage with visitors, local community, Council and Education groups in a friendly and helpful manner to deliver efficient and friendly service and storytelling of our conservation and environmental endeavours.  

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have your experience in tourism/hospitality and ability to communicate with a diverse range of stakeholders.  Other key skills and qualifications we are looking for include:

  • Passion for tourism and providing exceptional customer service.
  • Experience managing a small team & a supportive leadership style.
  • Experience prepare financial reports (desirable) and training will be provided.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills & presentation to work in a tourism environment.
  • Strong initiative and ability to work autonomously.
  • An interest in local history of the area & experience in volunteering is desirable.
