Seymour Equine Services is located between Seymour and Nagambie, VIC in the Goulburn Valley region.
We are looking for a team player with good initiative and desire to progress your career to join our team in the role of Horse (Stallion) Trainer / Educator.
The role requires experience, confidence, and knowledge of equine handling & husbandry. Able to assist with the early education, maintenance and improvement of the behavior and fitness of the horses and manage the care of horses, as well as sick and injured horses under veterinary supervision.
Responsible for the general day-to-day care and training of the horses (stallions), including feeds, exercises, grooming and treatments. Previous experience with all aspects of stallion breeding operations including, teasing mares, preparing stallions for covers, preparing mares for covers and partaking in covers is highly regarded.
Daily tasks:
· Work across the broodmare and spelling departments as required.
· Daily care and training of stallions including feeds, exercises, grooms, assisting with vets and farriers, first aid as required.
· Analyze dispositions to anticipate any possible behavioral problems such as kicking, tossing, or biting; train accordingly to prevent future behavioral problems.
· Ensure you stable, feed, exercise stallions in a manner deemed proper and appropriate to maintain their health, wellbeing, and fitness.
· Observe nutrition and health and inspect injuries; notify veterinarian if needed.
· Exercise horses daily including swimming horses, ride young inexperienced horses, provide feedback reports on performance.
· Report any issues identified in riding work and in stables affecting their progress.
· Assist with foal handling and weaning.
Skills/Experience requirements:
· A minimum of 3 years full time experience in a similar role
· Experience with stallions in a previous role is essential.
· Proven knowledge and experience to train and prepare horses for breeding and selling purposes
· Knowledge and experience of horse training and handling methods specific to thoroughbred racing
· Experience with Prism or Ardex is beneficial but not required.
· You must hold a driver’s license
*You will be required to work outside of normal hours including weekend work and occasional additional hours if needed.
