About the role

This is a designated Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander position. Applicants for this position must be of Aboriginal descent through parentage, identification as being Aboriginal and being accepted in the community as such. Exemption is claimed under section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977

Northern NSW Local Health District (NNSWLHD) New Street Service is seeking an Aboriginal Clinician. This service provides coordinated, community based, specialist treatment service for 10-17 year olds who have engaged in harmful sexual behaviors, and their families and caregivers. New Street Services work with the young person so they can understand, acknowledge, take responsibility for and cease harmful sexual behavior.   In this role you will collaborating with local service providers, working with local Aboriginal Communities and providing counselling support to clients and their families. 

If you have/are: 

  • Relevant qualification in Bachelor of Social Work with eligibility for membership to Australian Association of Social Workers or Degree in Psychology with full registration with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) or hold as a minimum a bachelor degree in counselling or welfare or a related field, or other qualification deemed equivalent by the employer. 
  •  Ability to provide counselling services to individuals, and families in the context of child sexual assault, trauma, violence and abuse and understanding of the legal and policy framework governing child protection in NSW
  • Understanding of the impact of colonisation on Aboriginal people and communities and its relationship to Aboriginal family violence. Demonstrated ability to effectively work with Aboriginal communities in culturally competent ways and commitment to addressing Aboriginal health and community needs
  • Ability to provide counselling services to individuals, and families in the context of child sexual assault, trauma, violence and abuse and understanding of the legal and policy framework governing child protection in NSW

You may be subject to a probationary period of six months from the date of appointment to this position.

To be appointed as a Level 2 Health Professional evidence must be provided of three years' clinical experience and if requesting appointment as a Level 3 or 4 Health professionals evidence must be provided of three years' clinical experience and demonstrated experience of extensive specialist knowledge or a high level of broad generalist knowledge within their discipline as defined by the award definitions of a level 3 or level 4 practitioner.
