The Shellharbour Emergency Department is rapidly developing. We see 36,000 presentations per year, Have 12 months ACEM accredited training time and are the home of the Ultrasound Special S Skills term that is open to trainees from the district.
2024 will see us develop a Safe Assessment unit. This will be modelled off the St Vincents PANDA – and will be the only regional unit of its kind in NSW.
SHH is the regional centre for Psychiatry and with the recent addition of a Psychiatry Emergency Care Centre and the Safe Assessment unit about to be constructed there is lots to do.
In addition to this we have a whole site rebuild set for completion in 2028. The foundations of the new Emergency Department are being laid and time is of the essence while we develop Models of Care and staffing for the transition to the new site.
SHH works very closely with the other district EDs, contributing to the training of junior Drs and the development of models of care.

You will work 4 x 10 hour shifts with protected Non-Clinical time as per College guidelines if working full-time (Part-time positions available with similar awards) and enjoy a good mix of acuity, pathology and paediatrics.

Selection criteria: * Specialist registration or eligible for specialist registration as a Medical Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) within six months.

  • Fellowship of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (FACEM) and/or equivalent specialist recognition. Or eligible for Fellowship of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (FACEM) and/or equivalent specialist recognition within six months.
  • Evidence of continuing medical education and self-monitoring/audit practices consistent with the scope of practice requirements of the position.
  • Proven capacity and/or experience in the provision of effective high quality services, demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position including evidence of participation in quality improvement activities relevant to the specialty.
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching with experience in teaching both undergraduate and post graduate students and other staff of the hospital.
  • Demonstrate the skills and attitudes appropriate as a Senior Medical Practitioner including modelling a high standard of professional behaviour to junior medical staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and harmoniously with medical and other health services colleagues as part of a multi-disciplinary health care team and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients, colleagues, and staff and to work as an effective member of the clinical team across multiple sites.
  • Demonstrated experience in and commitment to research relevant to the role and needs of the Department.
