Job description

This role is to provide professional and quality nursing assessments to clients undergoing treatment for drug and alcohol issues or awaiting treatment for such issues. Specifically, the role requires the provision of holistic assessment, support and referral for the client, carer, and family.
The role includes using a community development approach to facilitate a network of health workers and community members sensitive to the needs of the Aboriginal community. In addition, there is a requirement to promote good health through education and empower and encourage Community members to take responsibility for their own health.
Organisational Profile
GEGAC is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation based on Gunaikurnai Country in Bairnsdale, Victoria. Consisting of about 160 staff, GEGAC is a Not for Profit organisation that delivers holistic services in the areas of Primary Health, Social Services, Elders & Disability and Early Childhood Education.
GEGAC is a child safe agency and has a zero tolerance of abuse or neglect of children and young people.
Position Purpose

Key Selection Criteria

  • A demonstrated interest in the family and health needs of the Aboriginal community and an understanding of Aboriginal culture.
  • Demonstrated experience in high quality clinical nursing care, including working with clients and alcohol and drug issues.
  • An ability to communicate and liaise effectively at professional and client levels.
  • Well-developed organisational and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, be self-motivated and to also work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • A strong commitment to education, skill development and dissemination of knowledge to other members of staff and the Community.
  • Sound administrative skills including the ability to maintain computer-based client management programs.
Qualifications and Registrations Requirement (Essential or Desirable).
  • Driver’s License ESSENTIAL
  • Current and ongoing registration as a Nurse (Division 1,2,3) ESSENTIAL
  • Medication Endorsement for Division 2 Nurses DESIRABLE
  • Certificate IV in Alcohol and Other Drugs DESIRABLE
  • Satisfactory Working with Children Check and Criminal Records Check ESSENTIAL
  • A person of Aboriginal / Torres Strait Islander background DESIRABLE
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccinated to align with mandatory vaccination directive applying to authorised workers ESSENTIAL
