Our team members provide thought leadership and professional and independent legal advice to secure optimum commercial outcomes, to manage the Group’s risk profile and to navigate our business through a complex legal and regulatory environment. The Opportunities
We currently have two exciting opportunities to join our high-performing Legal team supporting our Australian Food Group. These roles play an important role in ensuring key stakeholders are informed on the impact of legislation and regulatory requirements that may affect the organisation.
Both roles are being recruited simultaneously through a single process. Applicants will be considered equally for both vacancies unless a candidate has specifically requested to only be considered for one of the vacancies.
What you’ll do
Consumer and Regulatory Lawyer
In this role, you report to the Senior Lawyer and focus on marketing and advertising compliance across all channels, including in-store, above the line, external communications, product claims and trade and incentive promotions.
In particular, you will be responsible for:
- providing advice and support across a range of regulatory matters in a fast paced retail environment, including food and product safety, compliance with various advertising and industry Codes (for example, the AANA Codes and the Therapeutic Goods Advertising Code), biosecurity and retail operations
- supporting and making external submissions with respect to the relevant elements of the Australian legal framework and managing regulatory matters and enquiries
- drafting and negotiating a variety of agreements associated with promotions, campaigns, sponsorship and charitable fundraising arrangements
- building effective relationships across Woolworths' Brand and Marketing, Policy and Regulatory, Quality and Technical team, Group Sustainability (e.g. Nutrition and Health), E-Commerce and broader Woolworths Legal, Industry and Government Group teams
- assisting the General Counsel - Australian Food Group and Competition, to liaise with regulators on matters which affect the organisation’s present and future activities
Junior Commercial Lawyer
In this role you will report to the Senior Lawyer and focus on commercial contracts, competition and consumer law and general regulatory matters. You will support Woolworths Supermarkets, Everyday Mobile, Group Human Rights team and other business units where required.
In particular, you will be responsible for:
- drafting, reviewing, and negotiating commercial contracts (including product and service contracts, proof of concepts, licensing, non-disclosure, exclusivity, and distribution agreements).
- advising on regulatory and compliance issues in relation to competition and consumer laws, unfair contract terms, human rights, Food and Grocery Code of Conduct and Telecommunications Code of Practice.
- reviewing marketing materials, customer and supplier communications from a legal and compliance perspective.
- assisting in various Human Rights investigations, communicating with suppliers on responsible sourcing/ drafting letters in contemplation of potential disputes, addressing anti-discrimination matters, and providing project support.
- participating in strategic projects, offering legal perspectives to ensure initiatives comply with relevant legislation and regulations.
What you’ll bring
We are seeking two highly capable Lawyers who are collaborative and passionate and who consistently strive for better ways of working.
You will have:
- Bachelor of Laws with 2-6 years PQE with a well regarded law firm and/or in house experience; with a current Australian practising certificate
- Strong experience in commercial contracting and / or consumer and regulatory affairs
- An eagerness to grow as an inhouse lawyer in a supportive team environment
- Excellent communication and time management skills
- Personal qualities that align with our Group purpose, values and ways of working
