Our Opportunity

Work Location: Perth - Fortescue's Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk Noongar people.

Roster: Monday to Friday

Fortescue is currently operating five mine sites, a port facility and is expanding rapidly into a series of development projects across Australia and overseas. In addition, the company has set impressive targets to decarbonise its operations by 2030 and become a world leader in green steel production.

The Water Engineering Team plays an important role in addressing Fortescue's surface water management and water systems engineering challenges for new studies, projects and existing operations. An exciting opportunity has arisen for a talented and enthusiastic Lead Water Engineer to come on board to primarily support a development study in Gabon, and other miscellaneous strategic projects.

As well as good technical ability, the successful candidate will possess excellent project management and inter-personal skills, will be adaptable and self-motivated.

This position offers the successful candidate a unique opportunity to develop professionally across various aspects of the resource sector. The role will be Perth-based but includes opportunities for site work.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead, project manage and coordinate technical analysis and investigations in surface water and water systems to support the approval process and engineering feasibility study deliverables. This includes hydrology and waterways hydraulic studies for flood impact assessment, and flood risk review for bulk earthworks and mine infrastructure development.
  • Work and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to drive and deliver surface water and water systems study outcomes.
  • Attend site, including Gabon, when required to execute surface water investigations, monitoring programs and participate in other site-based activities such as stakeholder consultation.
  • Lead and undertake challenging technical analysis in resolving surface water/water systems issues that are complex, high risk and critical to the business.
  • Provide process improvement and technical mentoring to maintain team functionality.
  • Maintain a collaborative relationship with other functions of the business on all aspects of water management and contribute to knowledge building and awareness.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering or other relevant discipline
  • Demonstrated relevant experience
  • Understanding of catchment hydrology, river hydraulics, flood modelling, and use of modelling tools/software (TUFLOW and RORB) and supporting spatial GIS tools/software
  • Strong project management/delivery skills in water-in-mining settings
  • Excellent engagement, critical thinking and influencing skills
  • Effective communication, teamwork and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent report writing skills including experience using Microsoft Office (or equivalent)
  • Western Australian Driver's Licence
