Special Olympics Australia (SOA) is the peak national body developing and delivering inclusive sport and physical activity programs for people with intellectual disability (PWID). Since 1976, SOA has provided year-round inclusive sports training and competition in sports for children and adults with intellectual disability in communities throughout Australia.
SOA strives to ensure that everyone living with an intellectual disability has opportunities to participate in sport. The dedicated network of volunteers and coaches create accessible sports training, coaching and competitions that allow PWID to reach their personal best – in sport and in life.
Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) was established globally in 1981 and has raised over $1 billion for Special Olympics athletes around the world, making it the largest worldwide organisation dedicated to raising funds for Special Olympics. LETR began Torch Runs in Australia in 2002.
Annually more than 100,000 law enforcement members around the world raise funds for Special Olympics and champion the acceptance of people with intellectual disability in their own communities. LETR members carry the Flame of Hope into the opening ceremonies of Special Olympics Games at Local, State, National and World level and participate with athletes from Special Olympics programs around Australia. LETR members give generously via workplace giving and participate in innovative fundraising activities such as Gala Dinners and the Polar Plunge raising funds for Special Olympics Australia.
