In this team, world-class engineers work together to build a highly reliable low-latency platform to enable the firm's business.The Mako Linux team is responsible for the global Linux footprint of Mako, including all co-located, low latency trading servers, core compute, workstation, developer and simulation environments. The team is comprised of a number of individuals ranging in experience and together forms a tight knit group operating together at a global level to deliver a reliable, scalable, cost effective and highly performant platform used by Mako's trading, quant, developer and support teams.The Linux Engineer will work closely with all members of the Mako Linux team globally, as well as experienced team members in the Sydney office to manage, support and extend Mako's global Linux environment.Do you have an ambition to work with a highly talented and detail focused global team responsible for a wide ranging array of equipment, scale and sites?Do you love the details of Linux platform engineering including kernel internals, building resilient systems, scripting, automation and deep dive problem solving through the entire stack?Do you take complete responsibility for your tasks and see them through to conclusion, asking for help where needed?Do you want to get exposed to a global derivatives trading companies Linux systems stack including ultra low latency and high availability?Do you love scripting and automation and aspire to automate what you can?What you'll be involved in:
- Supporting a real-time, latency-sensitive trading operation spread across global co-location facilities with a high degree of reliability
- Troubleshooting and solving faults in both hardware and software
- Planning and engineering for capacity, disaster recovery, business continuity, and high availability
- Supporting core trading and business software deployed on Linux
- Driving the automation and efficiency of all things Linux at Mako
- A love of problem solving and troubleshooting
- A desire to grow your technical skills and dig deep into Linux internals
- You love learning the details and minutiae of systems engineering in a multi-vendor environment
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- A passion for automating processes and using an infrastructure-as-code mind-set
- An open-minded and innovative approach and a desire to take initiative
- 4+ years' experience working as a Linux engineer in an enterprise environment
- A deep understanding of the Linux boot process, kernel process management, disk and storage layer
- Working with various Linux versions and distros, from servers to the workstation, through install, config, troubleshoot and optimisation phases.
- Knowledge of kernel networking concepts and protocols such as TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, etc.
- Deep experience with and a love of at least 1 scripting language for complex tasks (python/bash preferred)
- Hands on experience using and extending Linux based automation tooling (ansible/puppet)
- Experience with financial, trading or low-latency environments is advantageous but not a requirement
- Experience with networking equipment and concepts is a plus
- Hands on experience working in colocation/data center facilities and on-prem Linux servers
