About the Role 

The Peer Support Worker role is critical for the success of the Safe Haven Café, providing a high level of support to those seeking assistance at the Safe Haven Café, within the Intentional Peer Support framework.  In partnership with the Safe Haven Café Mental Health Clinician, the Peer Support Worker will provide support to those people presenting to the café.  The role will support the delivery of psychosocial interventions, including group sessions and activities as required. The Peer Support worker will be integral to the co-design and co-delivery of the Safe Haven Café as a service and its evaluation.   

Classifications for this position will range from Lived Experience Worker Level 2 MP32 - MP35 ($67,522 – $71,635 per annum pro rata)

Your Contribution 

  • You will have a lived/living experience of mental health challenges and of accessing or trying to access mental health services 

  • You will have demonstrated capacity to skilfully use your knowledge and experience of mental health challenges and to support consumers 

  • Completion of or willingness to undertake training in Intentional Peer Support (core training)  

  • Sound working knowledge of and a commitment to recovery oriented practice in mental health rehabilitation, supporting the work with consumers and carers to promote self-determination, personal strengths and enable progress towards reaching individual goals. 

  • Ability to provide culturally competent services appropriate to the needs of people from diverse backgrounds including those from a CALD background.  

  • Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills, including problem solving ability and conflict resolution skills, as well as sound oral and writing skills. 

  • Current National criminal history check, or willing to obtain

About Safe Haven Cafe 

SVHM is reopening the Safe Haven Café at the Fitzroy campus based on the successful United Kingdom model. The Safe Haven Café will be located within an existing Art Gallery space and will be open in the afternoon and evening over weekends (Friday, Saturday, Sunday).  It will be available to mental health consumers as an alternative to the Emergency Department, for those needing a safe space as well as peer support, advice and assistance with navigating the mental health system.
