About the Adult Mental Health Service

Austin Health Mental Health Division (MHD) provides care and services through a comprehensive range of teams to meet the needs of mental health consumers and carers throughout Victoria. Services in the Mental Health Division are located across Austin Health and the community.

All mental health services work within a clinical framework that promotes recovery-oriented practice and supported decision-making. This approach to client wellbeing builds on the strengths of the individual working in partnership with their treating team.  It encompasses the principles of self- determination and individualised treatment and care.

The Adult Mental Health Service provides clinical adult inpatient and community mental health services through the following service units:

  • Acute Inpatient Psychiatry Unit
  • Parent Infant Psychiatry Unit
  • Secure Extended Care Unit
  • Community Rehabilitation Program
  • PARC
  • Continuing Care Community Service
  • Mobile Support and Treatment Service
  • ADAS program
  • Perinatal Community Service.

About the role

The Level 2 Consumer Consultant will support the service to improve and expand consumer engagement in co-design projects across the service and support the implementation of the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System’s recommendations, the Mental Health and Wellbeing Act, and any other relevant projects.

A regular day will see you:

  • Support consumers who are accessing adult mental health services
  • Work with other leaders on co-designing and implementing service improvement initiatives
  • Support and work with other Lived Experience workforce employees

About you

The Consumer Consultant is pivotal in bringing the perspective and voice of the consumer to the broader system and will work to build participation of families and carers in consultation and co-design within the Adult Mental Health Service.

To be successful in this role you'll bring with you:

  • Relevant qualifications and/or experience
  • Significant personal Lived Experience as a consumer who has accessed area mental health services
  • The ability to work with and advocate for the needs of consumers of all backgrounds, genders, sexualities, cultures, and abilities
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to present at forums and meetings
