Job description

Who are we?

It’s an exciting time to join our organisation! On 1 March 2023, two of Australia’s most successful member-owned banking organisations merged, to form Heritage and People’s Choice - Australia’s leading mutual banking organisation and a genuine, member-owned alternative to the major banks.

We exist to create a better future for our members and the communities in which they live.

We are 100% member owned, with approximately 720,000 members and 1,900 employees.  We have dual head offices in Adelaide and Toowoomba, and 95 branches across South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and the Northern Territory, trading under two brands, Heritage Bank and People's Choice.

When you come to work at Heritage and People’s Choice, you’ll be joining a team of inclusive, friendly, and motivated employees who value making a difference every day for our members, community, and the planet. We are committed to creating an outstanding working environment where you feel supported, can continue to develop and are proud advocates of our members and our business.

About the role

Due to team development, we have a secondment opportunity until January 2025 to join our Lending Operations team as an Assessment Officer

We are rapidly expanding our offering across more markets nationally through multiple channels, be they digital, physical or mobile. As an Assessment Officer, not only will you be joining a team of high performing credit professionals, but you will also ensure our lending teams, regardless of geographic location or channel, are fully supported to deliver the best experience to all our members.

In this role you will be responsible for making risk-based decisions for Home Loan applications and providing recommendations to enhance our lending processes and credit policy. You will play a critical role in building and maintaining relationships with our lending teams and providing advice and guidance on credit risk, lending, and credit policy.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assessing home loan applications, making risk-based decisions within agreed service offerings and the achievement of individual KPI requirements
  • Demonstrating compliance with policies and procedures to effectively operate within Heritage and People's Choice risk appetite set by the Board
  • Exercising a personal Delegated Lending Authority with care and diligence and conduct assessments and formulate recommendations for loan applications
  • Establishing and maintaining business relationships with our Lending Teams and other Stakeholders as required
  • Providing advice and guidance on credit risk, lending, lending responsibly and policy to other Assessment Officers and Lending Teams
  • Collaborating on loan applications with Lenders on the credit worthiness of an application
  • Reviewing completed financial analysis for Self-Employed and Complex Structures that relate to loan applications
  • Ensuring policy and sound lending practices are applied consistently to minimise exposure to lending losses.
  • Providing feedback on policy and processes, and make suggestions for improvement
  • Maintaining knowledge of policies and procedures relevant to your position including keeping up to date with communications and assigned learning

What do I need?

Ideally, you’ll have extensive experience working in credit, whether it be in a decisioning capacity or a role with a strong focus on credit assessment. Your strong assessment skills and understanding of lending appetite will assist you in analysing home loan applications, including complex structures and self-employed applicants.

Additionally, your experience in exercising a large delegation of authority, along with a strong understanding of contemporary retail banking and lending practices, will set you apart from the crowd. We’re looking for someone with an impeccable eye for detail, who takes pride in driving high performing outcomes through superior service.

Benefits of working for us

We believe the little extras can make a big difference in supporting your success. That’s why we offer great incentives and benefits including:

  • Paid parental leave and special leave provisions
  • Flexibility and hybrid working arrangements
  • Employee banking benefits and discounted insurances
  • Career development opportunities, and ongoing training, coaching and support
  • A dedicated Employee Assistance Program for you and your family to access in times of need
  • Paid volunteering days and access to a diverse range of community and charitable initiatives
