Manager - Aboriginal Health Unit (AHU)

Full Time, Ongoing

As per section 12 of the Victorian Equal Opportunity Act 2010, this is a ‘Special Measures’ designated position such that only Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identified people are eligible to apply for the role.

The Team: 

The Aboriginal Health Unit (AHU) is a dedicated team comprising of Aboriginal Liaison Officers, Manager and Director of Aboriginal Health. The AHU building is located on the grounds of the hospital, external to the main building, and is a healing environment with a strong focus on cultural safety for staff, patients and family/community.
All Aboriginal Staff are passionate about caring for Mob, are professional and focussed on ensuring the patients journey is supported, advocating for culturally appropriate care and the best health outcomes. 
AHU is committed to growing the Aboriginal workforce within MBPH.

The Role: 

The Manager of the Aboriginal Health Unit will be responsible for providing daily support and regular direct line supervision to our Aboriginal Liaison Officers, to oversee and manage the day-to-day function of the AHU, to provide cultural support, resources, education and advice across the entire Mildura Base Public Hospital organisation, including clinical service, acute inpatient, mental health and community/outreach services.

This position will be remunerated in accordance with the successful applicant's qualifications and experience. 

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • A sound knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture, society and kinship networks, as well as the ability to communicate with, and be accepted by, the local Aboriginal community
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills, written and verbal, and the ability to develop and maintain communications with Aboriginal communities, other hospital staff, other mainstream agencies, and government departments
  • Ability to assist in the development of strategies and guidelines for programs that could improve access to Aboriginal and mainstream services by the Aboriginal community
  • An understanding of Aboriginal health issues at a local and state level

Previous management qualifications and/or experience, as well as previous health and/or mental health employment or experience is desirable.
