About the Role

 We are currently recruiting for a Manager Disputes within our legal team. Working closely with the Head of Legal (Disputes), the Manager Disputes will manage several of BHP’s most material disputes and regulatory engagements globally.


The Manager Disputes will be responsible for providing high quality technical advice to inform key company decision-making processes, proactively and independently managing legal risk and exposure associated with major disputes and related costs through the provision of quality, timely and cost-effective legal representation in conjunction with external legal services providers, and for monitoring and advising on relevant external developments.


This role is expected to deliver independent, strategic advice across all the subject areas covered by the Disputes team, balancing commercial, reputational, and legal risks and opportunities. Occasional travel domestically within Australia and internationally (when permitted) is required.

Your accountabilities include:

  • Lead the management of material disputes and regulatory engagements for BHP, including:
  • Managing an internal team of three permanent lawyers (plus secondees from time to time) and external counsel teams.
  • Developing and implementing case strategy and overseeing the preparation of key court, inquiry and investigation filings, reports, correspondence, and advice.
  • Internal stakeholder engagement, including with Corporate Communications, Investor Relations, Group Governance and Group Reporting.
  • Deliver independent, strategic advice across a range of subject areas, balancing commercial, reputational, and legal risks and opportunities.
  • Disputes-related input into key company decision-making processes and the management of significant disputes-related risks and opportunities.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with senior client groups and stakeholders.
  • Support the Head of Legal (Disputes) with stakeholder reporting and briefings and managing a global team of disputes and regulatory professionals.

About You

The successful candidate will contribute to the success of BHP by providing specialist, strategic legal advice to enable the business to achieve its commercial objectives in compliance with applicable laws and consistent with the BHP Charter.


As a successful candidate you will possess the following:

  • Deep technical understanding of Australian law and legal process (foreign legal experience and qualification is advantageous).
  • Demonstrated experience in global disputes (litigation / arbitration) and regulatory investigations.  Investigations experience is advantageous. 
  • Experience in the resources industry is highly regarded.
  • Law degree and admission to practice in Australia, with current practising certificate.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English (Spanish is advantageous), including the ability to succinctly communicate legal strategy, risks, and opportunities.
  • Strong understanding of emerging issues and disputes-related risks.
  • Ability to lead and deliver very large legal projects involving cross-functional teams.
  • Outstanding judgement in balancing competing financial and reputational priorities.
  • Ability to influence senior internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and interpersonal skills.
  • Commercial and strategic acumen.
