About the team

The Student Equity and Success teams facilitates a high-quality student experience focused on access and support for students, both academic and cocurricular activities that enrich an inclusive student experience, including the development of a dedicated first year experience. The Success Team is responsible for the oversight of the Student Access and Participation Framework which, through local ownership and accountability, the University community seeks to empower all students to aspire to, achieve and thrive at The University of Western Australia.

The Success team runs the Academic Skills Centre and initiatives that support students for academic success, including to improve their study, writing, communication, English, STEM and research skills. They deliver an innovative program of peer-led academic supports, workshops, drop-in study sessions, online sessions and develop interactive resources. The team deliver dedicated support to students who are in varying transitions of their learning journey (for example first year students and others new to UWA, and students identified as at risk) to build learning communities and support academic success. They also focus on supporting students from diverse backgrounds and those entering via alternative pathways.

About the opportunity

As the appointee you will, under broad direction, work closely with the Associate Director, Student Equity and Success and will be responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of high-quality academic support programs and services, as well as University-wide services and initiatives including specialist programs targeted at identified student cohorts, and programs and activities that build learning communities and support transitions into and throughout the university journey.

The Manager, Student Success provides strategic advice to senior management and key stakeholders in the development of strategies, plans and policies to increase student retention and success. The position is responsible for academic and cocurricular activities that enrich the student experience, including supporting an embedded and dedicated first year experience.

This is a senior role that leads a team of specialist advisers and collaborates across the University to ensure that Student Life delivers programs and activities targeting the specific development needs of a diverse student cohort, including those who have traditionally been under-represented in higher education.

About you 

To be considered for this opportunity, you will demonstrate:

  • Postgraduate qualification and extensive relevant experience; or extensive management experience and expertise in a relevant area; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training
  • Ability to lead, manage, develop and motivate a team of specialist staff, show initiative and ensure training and development for staff.
  • Substantial experience in establishment, leadership and management of program parameters, including development and execution of project plans, budgets and relevant quantitative and qualitative evaluation and reporting.
  • Proven extensive expertise in the leadership, implementation, and evaluation of institution-wide programs, plans and strategic initiatives, and understanding of relevant underpinning theories and frameworks.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including extensive experience working with students from diverse cultural, linguistic and educational backgrounds.
  • Excellent consultation and negotiation skills, and the ability to build effective working relationships with key stakeholders at all levels.
  • Ability to foster and promote an inclusive, collaborative and safe working environment, and effectively handle conflict.
  • Ability to operate independently and with accountability to deliver high-quality and innovative programs.
  • Ability to solve and offer solutions for complex issues.                       

Note: National Police Clearance and Working with Children Check will be a requirement for this position. Occasional weekend work and some after work may also be required.
