The team
Market Supervision seeks to ensure trust and confidence in Australia's financial markets by regulating market intermediaries (including market participants, investment banks, securities dealers and issuers of over the counter (OTC) products). We also carry out surveillances of Australia's listed and OTC markets and test our stakeholder's compliance with the law.
The Derivatives Surveillance team is primarily responsible for surveillance of trading activity which occurs across listed and OTC derivatives markets and for ensuring that those who participate in the market comply with relevant obligations under the Corporations Act 2001, Australian Financial Services Licence regime and the ASIC Market Integrity Rules.
The role
As a Market Analystin the Derivatives Surveillance Team, you will report to the Senior Manager, Derivatives Surveillance and:
- conduct surveillance and technical analysis to identify, investigate and take action against signs of market misconduct such as insider trading, and market manipulation in fixed income, currency and commodity derivatives markets.
- utilise database systems to interrogate large data sets for conducting surveillance.
- contribute to delivering on ASIC's strategic priorities, including in the areas of sustainable finance and digital technology and data.
- undertake work with varying levels of complexity and sensitivity and make sound regulatory judgements.
- proactively identify emerging issues and systemic risks and develop strategies to address them.
- undertake complex research and provide subject matter expertise and advice on policy issues relating to derivative markets.
- engage with market intermediaries to ensure their compliance with the law, Australian financial service licensee obligations and ASIC's market integrity rules.
- assist with enhancement of surveillance functionality and team processes.
- participate in multi-skilled project teams, including actively sharing knowledge with other team members.
About you
- Relevant tertiary qualification(s).
- Demonstrated technical understanding of the Australian financial system and knowledge of ASIC's regulatory function.
- Understanding of the role of surveillance and enforcement relating to ASIC's Market Integrity Rules, the Corporations Act and Australian Financial Services Licensee obligations.
- Financial markets experience in fixed income, currency and/or commodities.
- Demonstrated analytical, investigative research and presentation skills.
- Experience in providing strategic and technical advice on matters relating to the conduct and regulation of markets and intermediaries.
- Professional experience from within a front office or risk management role will be highly regarded.
- Experience working with large data sets and trade surveillance functionality will be highly regarded.
