The Opportunity
The Department of Parliamentary Services (DPS) is recruiting for a Parliamentary Service Level 4 Mechanical Fitter Leading Hand within Property Services Branch.
Maintenance Services is the maintenance authority for Parliament House and is responsible for repairs and maintenance of the building's structure, fabric, finishes, landscape and all engineering services such as air-conditioning, power, lighting, hydraulic services and movement system
DPS supports the functions of the Australian Parliament and the work of parliamentarians through the provision of professional services, advice and facilities, the ongoing maintenance of Australian Parliament House (APH) and makes the building, and the important activity that takes place within it, accessible.
The Maintenance Services Section's purpose is to provide quality preventative maintenance and break down rectification services in APH to DPS, parliamentarians, building occupants and visitors. Our goal is to exceed industry best practice in every endeavour we undertake through always considering the most appropriate means of delivery.
Who we are looking for
The Department of Parliamentary Services (DPS) is seeking to recruit a motivated, adaptable and innovative person for the role of Maintenance Officer - Mechanical Fitter Leading Hand, Maintenance Services. Mechanical Services is a Business Unit within Maintenance Services, responsible for the Mechanical and Hydraulic systems and Mechanical Plant and Equipment of the building.
As part of the Mechanical Services team, the successful applicant will be required to contribute to the overall service delivery of the Business Unit by undertaking tasks including, but not limited to preventive, emergency and corrective maintenance utilising trade skills, recording and reporting on required work, assisting with project investigations and completing training and other physical tasks. The role requires working with a wide variety of clients, internal and external to the Parliament, in a dynamic work environment where priorities and deadlines that frequently change.
The team provides the resources to carry out planned and breakdown maintenance with a mix of in-house trade staff and external contractors. You must be well presented, neat and tidy at all times, professionally courteous and abide by the Parliamentary Service Values and Codes of Conduct.
Job Specific Requirements:
  • Trade Qualifications (Certification III) in Fitting and machining or a related Mechanical Trade.
  • Ability to work shift and on-call rosters.
  • Additional qualification(s) in a mechanical trade highly desirable.
  • Safety related qualifications such as working at heights and confined space entry is desirable.
  • The successful applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a Baseline Vetting (Protected/Restricted) security clearance.

Duty Statement

Immediate supervisor: Manager - Mechanical Services PSL6
Under limited/general direction undertake duties in accordance with the agreed standards for the Parliamentary Service Level 4 classification. The duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Undertake all work requiring the application of trade skills relating to a wide range of situations on operations and maintenance of buildings, plant, equipment and fixtures &fittings. Undertake tasks in either a workshop situation or as a member of a team operating in the field.
  • Assist in the guidance and direction of staff to effectively complete planned and emergency work.
  • Report and record completed tasks and additional required maintenance to management and through using the computerised maintenance management system.
  • Ability to work flexible hours to meet operational requirements including rostered shifts and on call.
  • Ensure the highest standards of safety in all areas of operation in accordance with WHS policy.
  • Participate in approved formal and on job training programs.
  • Other duties as required, such as working at height, first aid, confined space entry and rescue, Climbing ladders, elevated platforms access, lifting and other activities requiring a suitable level of physical fitness.

Salary
Currently, the salary range for this position is $74,730 - $81,202 per annum. The successful candidate is entitled to an additional 17% flexibility loading on top of the salary range.
Conditions of Employment
Employment opportunities at Department of Parliamentary Services are subject to a range of conditions prescribed in the Parliamentary Service Act 1999 which include:
  • Australian citizenship - to be eligible for employment with DPS, applicants must be an Australian Citizen.
  • Security clearance and character clearance - the preferred applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a security clearance at the level specified, as well as complete and be deemed suitable through a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check.
  • Health assessment - a pre-employment health assessment will be required where there are physical or medical requirements for the role.
