The Faculty of Science teaches approximately 7000 full-time student equivalents, with an academic staff of approximately 500 and general staff of 300. The Faculty is one of the largest and most complex faculties of UNSW Sydney. It comprises the School of Aviation, Biological Earth and Environmental Science (BEES), Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences (BABS), Chemistry, Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), Mathematics and Statistics, Optometry and Vision Science (OVS), Psychology, and Physics. It also includes several major Research Centres and field stations.
The Precinct Services is made up of Upper and Lower Campus Stores and Workshops. The team provides a range of research and teaching support services to all Faculties and Divisions, on and off campus through centrally managed procurement services, logistics management (internal and external) and equipment repairs, maintenance, and design.
The Science Store and Workshop Precinct Services is designed to achieve alignment between the University’s service offerings and Research and Teaching goals.
The Mechanical Workshop Tradesperson will support the provision of a range of technical (mechanical) services to support the teaching and research activities/projects within the Faculty and wider University. Some manual handling tasks are associated with the role including frequent movement, bending, lifting, pushing and/or pulling, handling of heavy, awkward, large bulky materials and handling of gas cylinders.
About the role
$89k - $101k plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
Fixed Term – 12 months
Full-time (38 hours per week)
The Mechanical Workshop Tradesperson reports to the Workshop Team Leader and has no direct reports.
Specific responsibilities for this role include:
Manufacture standard and non-standard equipment and/or devices, or experimental research and teaching equipment using various machines and tools.
Modify existing equipment as per drawings supplied by the client, electronic or mechanical, including but not limited to fitting, machining and welding.
Construct, repair and maintain Faculty research and teaching equipment
Advise customers on equipment and technical design issues.
Provide technical advice on materials used within all Faculty workshops and on its sources/supplier’s materials.
Assist with moving equipment and furniture within the Faculty as required.
Assist with maintaining workshop equipment and job records.
Assist the Workshop Team Leader with training new staff and /or apprentices as required.
Stay abreast of developments and improvement in industry techniques in order to provide expert technical advice and input in the design of equipment and facilities.
Assist with the movement of gas cylinders, large equipment deliveries and jobs when required which may involve heavy lifting, bending, pushing and/or pulling.
Other related duties as assigned by the Workshop Team Leader.

Cooperate with all health & safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the psychosocial or physical health and safety of yourself or others.
About the successful applicant (Selection criteria)
To be successful in this role you will have:
A TAFE or other trade certificate in fitting and machining or toolmaking, combined with relevant training and experience.
Demonstrated ability to interpret design drawings or sketches and provide design assistance/advice on the development and construction of standard and non-standard teaching and experimental equipment.
Strong verbal, written and customer service skills.
Self-motivated, ability to prioritise work tasks and meet deadlines.
Ability to work well in a team environment and encourage others to contribute to the Workshops team goals.
High attention to detail and experience working with machinery to produce high precision work and demonstrated ability to provide efficient and high-quality technical services in a client-focussed workplace.
Sound computer knowledge and skills in using spreadsheets and database software packages.
Competent in CNC programming and machine operations safely and accurately to perform a variety of task
Demonstrated ability to safely perform manual handling tasks and use equipment.
An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
