About the opportunity

NSW Health Pathology are currently seeking a highly motivated individual to join our Hornsby Ku-ring-gai pathology team as a Full Time Medical Laboratory Scientist – Haematology Team Leader. Use your extensive experience in Haematology and Morphology to lead and mentor a group of dedicated scientists and technicians in this busy 24/7 laboratory servicing the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital and greater Hornsby region. This is a fast paced environment where you will be supported with ongoing professional development opportunities to progress your people management and organisational skills.

The pathology department at Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital is a Category B laboratory run by NSW Health Pathology, working directly with our Category G Laboratory at Royal North Shore Hospital.

We are looking for someone who is passionate about haematological services, is dedicated to providing a quality service, and someone who wants to learn and develop their abilities and share their knowledge with the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai pathology team.

What you'll be doing

Responsible for delivering a range of operational laboratory activities including the coordination and provisions of scientific and technical training and the ongoing review, development and quality management of laboratory practices to ensure compliance with operational standards and procedures, quality standards and continual process improvement.

Bachelor Degree or higher degree in Science/Medical Laboratory Science or an equivalent qualification, with subjects relevant to pathology from a recognised tertiary institution
Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the delivery of pathology services relevant to the laboratory, including use of Laboratory Information Systems, Patient Systems and Quality Control Systems and computer programs such as Microsoft Office suite
Customer focused approach displaying well-developed interpersonal skills and good oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with customers, patients and clinical and laboratory staff, along with report writing skills, statistical evaluation of scientific data and the ability to effectively communicate policies and procedures
Ability to work in a responsible and efficient manner and to manage competing priorities to meet deadlines
Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment while working autonomously to deliver results within specified timeframes and contribute to a range of diagnostic skills relevant to the laboratory
Display initiative, problem solving and analytical skills including an ability to apply established principles in a pathology laboratory and investigate and resolve general and complex issues within the laboratory environment
Sound understanding of legislation, policies and requirements that impact the laboratory environment including work health and safety and privacy requirements
Demonstrated experience in blood film morphology

Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Infectious Diseases

This is a Category A position. All Category A applicants must read and understand NSW Health Policy Directive PD2022_030 Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Diseases. All recruits must agree to comply with the requirements outlined in this policy. All recruits must provide evidence against specified diseases and comply with the requirements of this policy at their own cost prior to appointment.

All NSW Health workers are required to have two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, as defined by NSW Health. Employees working in a clinical area or are required to attend clinical areas are considered category A. Category A positions are required to provide evidence of having received three doses of COVID-19 vaccine in accordance with the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (TGA) and meet the requirements of the Occupational Assessment Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy Directive. You will be required to provide a record of your COVID-19 vaccination status if successful.

Acceptable proof of vaccination is the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement or AIR COVID-19 Digital Certificate. Booster doses are highly recommended for all health care workers who have completed the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations.
