About the opportunity

NSW Health Pathology are looking for a talented Technical Officer to join the research arm of our Molecular Medicine Department. Based at John Hunter Hospital, we are looking for highly motivated team players!

The NSW Health Pathology Molecular Medicine Department is located a short drive from Newcastle, on the John Hunter Hospital Campus, with beautiful surroundings and outdoor areas. What you'll be doing

This position offers an exciting opportunity to work in a highly sophisticated Genomics Laboratory that specialises in cancer genomic testing in addition to undertaking routine molecular genetics and cytogenetic investigations. You will work in a team of highly trained and experienced technical and scientific staff that offer innovative genomic testing solutions. You will perform a range of laboratory investigations and tests (manual and automated) and technical tasks by applying established methods and procedures, as directed. Undertake other laboratory duties including preparation of materials and the maintenance of equipment in line with established laboratory processes, procedures and protocols.

  1. Minimum qualification of Diploma in Laboratory Technology or an equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary institution with subjects relevant to pathology or Medical Laboratory operations
  2. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the delivery of pathology services within a discipline relevant to the department, including methods such as microarrays, real-time PCR, Sanger sequencing and Massive Parallel Sequencing and an understanding of their use in diagnostic pathology services as well as use of Laboratory Information Systems, Patient Systems and Quality Systems
  3. Ability to work in a responsible and efficient manner and to manage competing priorities to meet deadlines
  4. Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment whilst working autonomously to deliver results within specified timeframes set to meet client expectations
  5. Customer focused approach displaying well-developed interpersonal skills and good oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with customers and patients as well as clinical laboratory staff
  6. Display initiative, problem solving and analytical skills including an ability to apply established principles in a pathology laboratory and investigate and resolve general and complex issues within the laboratory environment
  7. Commitment to the principles of quality management and continuous quality improvement and to identify, develop and implement quality and service improvement activities
  8. Demonstrated experience in research project management
