Job description

The South West Aboriginal Medical Service (SWAMS) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service based in Bunbury which provides a variety of health services to Aboriginal people in the South West and the Great Southern region of Western Australia. SWAMS delivers a wide range of primary health and community programs and has a strong growth strategy through partnership opportunities and future community development.

SWAMS has an exciting opportunity for a dynamic male to join SWAMS to work in the area of Men’s Business Health.

SWAMS encourage applications from Aboriginal Health Workers/Practitioners/ Indigenous Outreach Workers or Aboriginal staff with experience in community engagement. Skills and experience in the sexual health field will be highly regarded. Key responsibilities of the role will include community engagement, education, health promotion, advocacy, innovation and identifying opportunities to increase testing and management of sexually transmitted infections. The role will involve engaging men into health care with a focus on sexual health. The role will be based in Bunbury with travel to SWAMS outreach clinics. The position will involve both working within a team and independently.

SWAMS is looking for someone with well-developed communication skills to effectively engage with community and external stakeholders and to provide culturally appropriate education and health care which meets the needs of the community.

Specific requirements of this position include but are not limited to;

Essential Criteria

Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent under section 50(d) Equal Opportunity Act.

Knowledge, skills and experience in the sexual health field.

Demonstrated experience improving the health and wellbeing of outcomes for Indigenous people in sexual health.

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal people.

Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Indigenous communities with the ability to engage and work effectively with Aboriginal people and communities.

Well-developed interpersonal skills to enable effective communication and the ability to develop relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Experience in writing reports, general correspondence, and documentation.

Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a team member with minimal supervision.

Demonstrated time management skills.

Desirable Criteria

Current knowledge of legislative obligations for Equal Opportunity, Disability Services, Occupational Safety and Health and how these impact on employment and service delivery.

Certificate IV in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Health Care

Knowledge and expertise in the use of Communicare or similar clinical database system

All candidates must have a current WA Driver’s License, Working with Children Check and will be required to undertake a National Police Check prior to beginning employment.

The preferred candidate will be required to provide a clear drug and alcohol screen prior to offer of employment.
