About the role
We’re entering a new phase of growth in our Advisory group and are looking for Mining Consultants / Senior Mining Consultants to play a leading role and be part of our Strategy Optimization team. AMC Advisory focuses on bridging the gap between technical solutions and commercial mining outcomes by providing whole of mine optimization advice. The role(s) will be based out of one of our global offices based across Australia, Canada, South Africa, and the United Kingdom.
You might currently be in an operational or consulting role. Either way, you’ve got a core understanding of the full mine value chain and are keen to deep dive into the intricate challenges and opportunities often associated with the mining industry to uncover real value. As a member of our Strategy Optimization team you will be supported by consultants from both our Advisory and Operations teams – all experts in their respective disciplines, keen to share their knowledge.

Every mining operation is unique, and it takes years of hard-won experience to understand how changes to the economic environment, the physical environment, the mining an processing operations impact on a mining operation’s present and future value. Based on our unique IP, AMC’s Hill of Value® (HoV) process allows our clients to model all options and scenarios to ensure they understand the key opportunities and risks associated with all aspects of their mining operations. Utilizing our HoV modelling software, we provide a robust and comprehensive assessment of multiple input and scenario combinations to uncover all the available strategic options, allowing our clients to make an informed decision to achieve their business goals.
Who you will be working with
Derek du Preez is the Executive Lead of AMC’s Advisory team. He has over 30 years of experience with expertise in feasibility studies, technical due diligence, and business improvement and transformation of underground and open pit metalliferous mines.
You will report to Jayson Tolley, Advisory Lead – Strategy Optimization. Jayson has over 15 years of experience in both operational and consulting management roles. He has significant experience based in underground hard-rock mining, with a particular skillset in strategic analysis, engineering design, detailed mine planning, financial analysis and project management.

By combining our AMC HoV process and proven analytical tools with expert knowledge in whole of mine optimization, we deliver new insights and unlocking real value for our clients. You will work in a well-established team environment and use your strong analytical abilities and communication skills to help unlock real value in mining operations and projects.
You will undertake comprehensive assessments of strategic mine plans and business strategies, analyse complex data sets, and collaborate with AMC teams to quantify value drivers and develop optimized solutions. These projects typically include site visits to fully understand the processes and practices used at the operation, to liaise with key stakeholders, and collect information to identify optimal solutions.
You will contribute to strategy optimization studies, concept to feasibility studies, business improvement / transformation studies, and a variety of other Advisory projects. You will maintain an understanding of emerging technologies applicable to the mining industry, and continue to develop your professional network within the industry.
Core functions and Specialist skills required
- Operational experience in open pit and / or underground hard rock mining.
- Sound working knowledge of a broad range of mine planning and operational practices.
- Solid experience in a range of mining methods and mining equipment applications.
- Solid understanding of cut-off grade policies and Hill of Value® theory.
- Solid practical experience in a range of business improvement methods such as Lean, Six-Sigma and Theory of Constraints.
- Good working knowledge of mine capital and operating cost estimation.
- Strong technical, leadership, project management, analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Experience in coaching and mentoring.
- Experience in and / or an inclination for business development.
- Excellent communication and report writing skills. The ability to capture and clearly convey critical observations, key strategies, and recommendations in a variety of oral and written formats.
- Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams, often across different time zones.
- Excellent time management skills and the ability to work efficiently in a dynamic consulting environment.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel® skills, including VBA macros.
- Fluent in spoken and written English
- Experience with mine planning and optimization software (i.e. Mine Shape Optimizer, Lerchs-Grossman Pit Optimization, etc.).
- Experience with manipulating large datasets and data analytics.
- Tertiary qualification in mining engineering or related discipline.
- Post graduate qualifications are desirable.
- Minimum 5 to 10 years’ experience in the mining industry, including technical and / or operational roles.
- Membership of an industry recognized professional organization.
