An exciting opportunity has become available in our Cultural Services team for a Museum Assistant Curator on a permanent part-time basis (0.36FTE – 14 hours a week).

In this role, the successful applicant will assist with the interpretation and development of the Museum collection in a variety of ways to encourage community engagement across diverse range of cohorts; assist with the cataloguing, care and conservation of the Museum collection and provide a high level of customer service to Museum patrons and other stakeholders.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a willingness to be flexible and fulfil a variety of roles to meet the requirements of the Organisation and uphold and consistently demonstrate the City's values of Respect, Integrity, Customer Service and Teamwork. This role will require working on a Saturday for museum opening hours. Saturday opening hours are covered on a rotating 1 in 3-week roster.

The key responsibilities of this role:

  • Be responsible for opening and closing the Museum, engaging with visitors and maintain the safety of visitors and the Museum collection.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of significance and Museum Collection Policies and assist with the development of the Museum collection in line with the Collection Policy.
  • Research and prepare content for exhibition interpretation, online content, museum research enquires and public programs.
  • Assist with the reviewing and accessioning collection items using the Museum’s MOSAIC CMS and implement best practice in the handling of the Museum’s collection items.
  • Work with the Coordinator to develop exhibitions and programs based around the Museum’s collection.
  • Assist with the delivery of museum public programmes to educate participants about Subiaco’s past and promote the Museum’s collection. 
  • Other duties as assigned by the Museum Coordinator.

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications or relevant experience in in Museum Studies, Arts Administration, Art History or related fields.
  • Demonstrated information and technology skills, including database collections systems (CMS) and Microsoft Office software.
  • Demonstrated research skills with application to collections, exhibition interpretation and public programming.
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills and proven ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated high level customer service skills. 
  • Maintained working with Children Check.
  • National Police Certificate.

  • Duties may require lifting, climbing ladders and bending.
  • Preparing for programs may require setting up chairs and moving equipment such as projectors and screens.
  • The employee may be required to lift and/or move or push on a trolley, collections objects under the guidance of the Coordinator.

Desirable but not required skills:

  • Sound knowledge and experience in museum practices and procedures including object handling.
  • Working knowledge of common historical reference tools and high level of research skills is desirable.
  • First Aid Certification.

Salary Range: $68,250 - $74,420 (pro-rata) plus 11% employer superannuation and additional co-contribution to your superannuation.
