What you'll be doing
The Music Therapist will provide a comprehensive Music Therapy service to the children, young people and families of the hospital. This service will be delivered through individual and group session in accordance with the principles and practices of Music Therapy and will include assessment and interventions as appropriate.
CLINICAL SERVICES
- Provide Music Therapy services to inpatient and/or outpatient referrals for assigned caseloads as delegated by their manager/managers.
- Document assessment, care planning and recommendations in the patient medical record in accordance with SCHN protocols
- Complete administrative functions including statistical collection and activity reporting in an accurate and timely manner
- Engage in an ethical and professional manner with patients, family/carers and staff in accordance with professional standards outlined by Australian Music Therapy Association (AMTA).
- Design, implement, and evaluate Music Therapy interventions which meet the individual needs of hospitalised children and their families
- Facilitate and teach coping strategies such as distraction and relaxation techniques for children experiencing pain or anxiety
- Provide group recreational/play activities to encourage socialisation for long term patients
- Plan interventions in a family centred manner ensuring confidentiality of care and the provision of a nondiscriminatory service.
- Work with the child/young person, their family and carer's and the team/s involved to establish therapeutic objectives
- Provide therapeutic musical activities and experiences,which promote social interaction between patients, family members and/or staff
- Assist with cover as determined by department manager/s ensuring an equitable service to all patients
- Co-ordinate the effective use of volunteers
- Recognised Music Therapy Degree and registration with the national registration body the Australian Music Therapists Association (AMTA). Demonstrated advanced interpersonal and communication skills, with proven success in multidisciplinary team settings
- Sound understanding of child and young people's development from 0-18, including the effects of stress and trauma in this population
- Demonstrated experience in planning, implementation and evaluation of Music Therapy programs along with significant experience working with children and young people of varying ages
- Demonstrated communication, time management and prioritisation skills with an ability to work flexibly within service demands.
- In depth understanding of the impact of chronic illness on children, young people and their families and psychosocial strategies which can be put in place to assist with the maintenance and or development of resilience.
