Job description

About the organisation

Every day, Life Without Barriers provides support and care to children and young people, as we work collaboratively with families, carers, and communities, to ensure they have the environment they deserve to grow. With a focus on ensuring safety and respect, this is an opportunity to make a positive and meaningful difference in these young lives and help pave a brighter future.

Life Without Barriers (LWB) is a leading social purpose organisation of 8,000 employees working in more than 500 communities across Australia. We support children, young people and families, people with disability, older people, and people with mental illness. We work with people who are homeless and refugees and asylum seekers. Join a community of people dedicated to breaking down barriers.

Our commitment

In 2021, SNAICC and LWB announced a new partnership and made a commitment to restoring the cultural rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, young people and families through community informed child protection reform.

Our Transformation Project involves three central commitments:

  • Influence the sector to adopt and implement priority reforms to reduce over-representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in out-of-home care.
  • Advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Controlled Community Organisations (ACCO’s) to receive support to commission and operate services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children through the investment of resources traditionally awarded to non-Indigenous organisations.
  • Transition all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people in our care to ACCO’s within ten years.

About the role

In this pivotal role, reporting to the Executive Director, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Practice and Partnerships, you will provide operational leadership nationally to design and implement the successful transition of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people from Life Without Barriers back to ACCO’s, in partnership with local jurisdictional teams.

You will lead a team that works closely with senior Client Services leaders, providing subject matter and cultural expertise, and monitoring progress and performance of partnerships established and the transition of services.

You will ensure that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people remain connected to their culture, provide strong advocacy to ensure their voices are heard, and develop a strong sense of connection and belonging. Working alongside our State based Directors of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Practice & Partnerships, will establish, and maintain relationships between Life Without Barriers and local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities.

Located in NSW, we are committed to our employees having access to a COVID safe office environment while enabling flexible work options.

About you

Your experience will demonstrate your commitment to the care and protection of children and young people with a focus on working with individuals, families and communities from a strength-based, culturally appropriate perspective.

You will have experience within the out of home care sector and hold extensive knowledge of issues impacting on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities in contemporary society.

You will have working knowledge of relevant legislative and regulatory environments and to demonstrate an ability to work collaboratively with a range of stakeholders including peers, employees, external organisations, funding bodies and government agencies.

Applicants must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent, self-identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait islander person and be accepted by their community as an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander person.

You will be required to provide contact details for a cultural referee who can comment on your knowledge of issues impacting on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities in contemporary society and your ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The cultural referee must also identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
