About This Opportunity

The Network Engineer will focus on providing Network Engineering, technical and software support for telecommunications and data communications systems. Some project management, specification and budgetary planning are also required. The position will frequently be a major link between ITS and the client and must therefore provide good communication to ensure customer satisfaction.

Working within the Infrastructure Operations team, you will be responsible for the day-to-day function of secure and highly available networks, computing platforms, servers, storage and, as well as assisting with IT change and implementation projects as part of continuous improvement to UQ's IT services.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Promote Cyber Security: Ensure compliance with the university's Cyber Security Policy and procedures.
  • Network Infrastructure: Implement, install, and maintain network systems.
  • IT Support and Maintenance: Diagnose and resolve complex issues and provide phone and email support to clients.
  • Project Management: Design, develop, and coordinate network projects, and contribute to network infrastructure design.
  • Research and Reporting: Investigate and report on new equipment and systems.
  • Policy Adherence: Follow university policies, including occupational health and safety, and participate in an after-hours on-call rotation.

This is a full-time, continuing (permanent) position.

At HEW level 6, the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $88,099 - $103,076 plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $94,512 - $110,579 annually. As these roles are covered by an Enterprise Agreement, you will also receive regular remuneration increases in line with the Enterprise Agreement.

About You

Essential

  • Qualifications and training equivalent to an undergraduate degree in electrical, electronic or computer engineering (or equivalent); or an equivalent combination of experience and/or education/training.
  • Skills in analysis, design, development, and maintenance of contemporary communications infrastructure. Specific knowledge in any of the following areas will be highly regarded: network accounting, network security, IP Telephony, server farm networking, Internet links and BGP, disaster recovery planning, MPLS, Wireless LAN technologies, Software defined Networking (e.g. Cisco ACI and VMWare NSX).
  • Experience scripting in Python, NodeJS, PHP or other relevant programming languages to achieve automation.
  • Good interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills with the demonstrated ability to interact effectively with clients.
  • Demonstrated ability to organise own time and approach tasks methodically with a clear attention to detail.

Desirable

  • Exposure to other areas of IT infrastructure namely, Compute, Storage, Firewalls and Public Cloud Services.
  • Relevant industry certifications, in particular CCNA and CCNP.
  • Exposure to a quality management framework/certification system such as ITIL.
  • Exposure to a formal service management or project management methodology.
  • Self-motivated and able to work proactively to objectives with limited guidance - either alone or as a member of a small team.
