Neuroscience Research Fellow

About the opportunity
The Menzies Institute for Medical Research (Menzies) is looking for a Neuroscience Research Fellow to join their team. Menzies is one of Australia's leading health and medical research institutes and is recognised worldwide for its research excellence. Menzies' mission is to perform internationally significant medical research leading to healthier, longer and better lives for all Tasmanians.
The Neuroscience Research Fellow will work within the Glial Research Team ( ) and use unique mouse and human stem cell resources to determine how multiple sclerosis-associated gene variants contribute to neuropathology and disease progression in high risk families.
The Neuroscience Research Fellow will conduct in vivo studies to determine how each variant contributes to or exacerbates multiple sclerosis-like pathology.
What you'll do:
  • Undertake high-quality Neuroscience Research, including planning, conducting, recording, and analysing laboratory studies, and presenting your scientific data in oral and written formats.
  • Secure external competitive and other funding; publish research findings and contribute to the successful supervision of research higher degree students to completion.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of productive and effective collaborations with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the development of the MS Research Flagship and its promotion through active involvement in consumer and community engagement activities.
What we're looking for:
  • A PhD in neuroscience or a related discipline is essential.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • A strong academic track record (relative to opportunity), including primary research publications in a relevant laboratory-based medical research discipline (recent graduates can provide evidence of pending publications).
  • Experience planning, undertaking, and analysing experiments that utilise histology and fluorescence microscopy is essential.
  • Experience working with rodent models of neurodegeneration is essential.
  • Knowledge of the scientific literature pertaining to glial cell function, including astrocyte, microglial and oligodendrocyte function.
Salary details
Appointment to this role will be at Academic Level A or B and will have a total remuneration package of up to $147,083 comprising base salary within the range of $78,499 to $125,712 plus 17% superannuation.
