The Burnie City Council is the major unitholder of the Burnie Airport Corporation, in partnership with Regional Airlines Australia.
This long-established regional airport offers commuters the ability to fly in and out of the North West of Tasmania, which is only an hour from Melbourne. Our typical market caters for tourism related travel needs, local residents travel needs, and provides an important service for business travellers, on demand.
Travellers can choose to fly with either Regional Express or Qantas, which provides variety in the market to cater for the diverse needs of our clients. The airport also serves to cater for airfreight, general aviation and a number of emergency related critical services.
With the emergence of the renewable energy industry in North West Tasmania, Burnie is placed to become the regional hub for renewable projects into the future. The airport will be an important strategic assets in this regard, so as to sustain the increase in population, construction works that will be necessary and to accommodate the import and export of resources.
The Role
The Burnie City Council is seeking to appoint an independent Non-Executive Director to the Board that will bring excellent governance and financial acumen and understanding. The role will be for a three (3) year period and may be extended.
The role is required to offer a strategic perspective on governance, safety, quality and risk matters and the incumbent will need the ability to balance the financial imperatives of ensuring the long term sustainability of the airport, against commercial outcomes and community expectations in order to meet governance and regulatory requirements and to ensure an exceptional level of service is delivered.
The Chairperson of the Board is to be appointed from the Burnie City Council’s two (2) Directors and therefore the successful incumbent will need to be able to take on the Chairperson role as needed.
Skills and Experience
The successful candidate will have experience in serving on board committees, or commensurate experience. As an independent thinker, you'll bring respectful and confident expression of views, contributing constructively to the Board's decision-making process.
ESSENTIAL attributes that should be demonstrated include:
- Australian Institute of Company Directors Course or similar.
- Financial management expertise, short and long term, and particularly in understanding asset management principles.
- Demonstrated performance as a Board member.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Excellent analytical and research skills.
- Excellent written and communication skills.
- Problem solving and decision-making skills.
- The ability to obtain and maintain any applicable Australian Government security clearances.
DESIRABLE attributes that should be demonstrated include:
- Background in or knowledge of the aviation industry.
- Appropriate qualifications in business, finance, governance, commerce, or other appropriate experience.
- Experience with rebranding and marketing for growth.

Meeting Commitments and Remuneration:
The Board convenes each month, generally on the 3rd Monday with an established business rhythm of annual considerations. Board members may also meet virtually as needed.
A Directors Fee of $15,000 per annum is payable, and travel arrangements will be reimbursed as part of the package.
