About the Hospital:

North Canberra Hospital (formerly Calvary Public Hospital Bruce) and Clare Holland House are now run and operated by Canberra Health Services (CHS)

This is a significant milestone as the ACT Government moves towards delivering a new billion-dollar hospital on Canberra’s Northside.

The current North Canberra Hospital is a level 4 hospital that provides a range of acute and sub-acute services including community based care to the residents of the northside of Canberra and Southern NSW.   North Canberra Hospital (NCH) is a 270 public hospital located in Canberra’s expanding northside. North Canberra Hospital operates a 24 hour Emergency Department. Inpatient services include general medicine, surgery, maternity, mental health and critical care.

Other service modalities include day surgery, specialist outpatient clinics, Hospital in the Home and the Geriatric Rapid Acute Care Evaluation service that reaches into aged care facilities across the ACT.

The new Northside Hospital will be built on the existing Calvary Hospital campus in Bruce. It will be a modern, state-of-the-art hospital for patients, visitors and its workforce and will provide more beds and increased services. Until then, it's business as usual at the NCH, and we'll keep providing high-quality care to our patients and community.

 About the role:

The Department of Neurology & Stroke at North Canberra Hospital (NCH) is seeking a neurology fellow who is focused on the delivery of high quality, effective, patient-centric care.

The neurology fellow will contribute to the neurology and stroke service by undertaking care of both inpatients and outpatients under the supervision of the consultant neurologists in the department. The fellow will run a rapid-access category 1 clinic, including a TIA/stroke clinic. Participation in neurology clinics including EEG and NCS will be possible upon discussion and agreement with the head of department. There will be opportunity to do MS or Headache clinic including Botox injections upon discussion and agreement with the department head.

It is expected that the fellow will participate in 2-3 outpatient clinics per week and in addition, the fellow will contribute to the out-of-hours, on-call roster for neurology and stroke. These on-call duties include assessment and management of acute stroke patients who may require acute therapy (thrombolysis and 2 assess suitability for endovascular clot retrieval) and undertaking ward rounds on weekends, suitable support by the on-call consultant will be provided.

The fellow will gain experience in management of complex neurology patient care, both inpatient and outpatient. There will also be the opportunity for the fellow to participate in research projects in neurology and stroke.

Specifically, the duties involve:

• Daily ward rounds  

• Participation in the on-call neurology stroke including stroke roster

• Diagnosis and management of acute stroke patients using multimodality imaging, assessing eligibility for IV thrombolysis and/or endovascular clot retrieval 2-3 weekly outpatient clinics, subspecialty clinics

• Participation in in-house research and multicentre clinical trials if any

• Teaching of medical students, junior medical staff, Basic Physician Trainees and nursing/allied health staff, as required. Academic title with the ANU is optional.

Provide and support competent and efficient clinical management of North Canberra Hospital medical patients under the supervision and direction of consultant neurologists by: 

• Provide assessment and management of acute presentations, in-patient care, diagnosis and management of patients in outpatient clinics, neurological consultations.  

• Participate in the after-hours on-call neurology roster as required.

• Participate in neurology outpatient clinics.

• Liaise with other key stakeholders in the hospital discharge planning process, including ensuring management of outliers, timely discharge of medical patients, discharge summary quality and attendance at the Multidisciplinary ward meeting.

• In addition, they are involved in clinical audit, the education of medical students, junior doctors and basic physician trainee registrars, and clinical research

• Contribute to clinical audit and participate in changes that improve quality and safety of patient care.

• Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Requirements/Qualifications:Mandatory

• Registered or eligible for unconditional registration as a medical practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.

• Currently in the final training year of FRACP Advanced Training in neurology or have received their Fellowship.

• The successful applicant will need to be available for weekend and after-hours work.

• An active interest in, and sound knowledge of, evidence-based medical practice within the specialty of neurology.

Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates and contingencies. 

• Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.

• Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, Clinical Governance Framework, Partnering With Consumers Framework and all other related frameworks.

• You will have a strong interest in developing further skills in medical education across all training levels

Desirable

• Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.

• Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, Clinical Governance Framework, Partnering With Consumers Framework and all other related frameworks.

• Prior to commencing this role, a current registration issued under the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011 is required.

• Undergo a pre-employment National Police Check.

• Comply with Canberra Health Services Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination policy.

• Comply with North Canberra Hospital Credentialing and scope of clinical practice requirements for medical professionals. (Doctors)
