ABOUT US
NSW Ambulance (NSWA) operates 5 fixed wing aircraft out of the Air Ambulance Base located at Mascot, Sydney. They deliver clinical care to critically ill or injured patients or patients requiring medical transport >250km who are unable to be transported by the Patient Transport Service (PTS).
There is an additional non-operational fixed wing aircraft used to cycle aircraft through maintenance. The NSWA fixed wing base at Mascot consists of a fleet of 5 new Beechcraft King Air B350C and in 2024 NSWA will be bringing online 2 brand new state of the art Pilatus PC24 jets.
All fixed wing aircraft are staffed with a Flight Nurse and pilot. Depending on the clinical requirements of the case, on occasion a doctor may be added to the flight. Flight nurses are all registered nurses and midwives with critical care experience; emergency medicine, intensive care or coronary care.
Mascot Base operates with 4 operational aircraft 24 hours, 7 days a week. The 5th aircraft is generally in maintenance but can be surged upon request when operationally necessary. As of 1 January 2022, the aircraft and pilots are provided by Pel-Air who operate and maintain the aircraft. The Flight Nurses/midwives and doctors are supplied by NSWA.
NSW Ambulance also has a contract with RFDS Dubbo and Broken Hill Base who operate 24 hours a day each with a fixed wing aircraft. These aircraft and all staff on them are supplied by the RFDS. There are also Beechcraft King Air B200C and Beechcraft King Air B350C which operate out of the two regional bases located at Dubbo and Broken Hill.
Both aircraft have the capacity to transport two stretcher patients. A B200 can also take three seated people (Flight Nurse, medical team, patients or escorts) whereas a B350 can transport four seated people.
