Casual Role Clinical Nurse Consultant, Infection Prevention
An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced Infection Prevention clinical nurse consultant to join the team at Peter Mac.
Comprehensive orientation is provided, with flexibility of hours, as the position is casual.
Essential Criteria
The candidate should:
- be a registered nurse,
- hold relevant tertiary qualifications in Infection Prevention,
- have a minimum of 3-years experience in the field of Infection Prevention,
- be an accredited nurse immuniser, and
- be a hand hygiene auditor.
The role requirements also include:
- a commitment to quality improvement in accordance with National Standards ( Std 3),
- a high level of communication skills both verbal and written,
- excellent understanding of clinical risk management,
- ability to work effectively as part of a team as well as independently
- capacity to apply evidence to support clinical practice.

Position Summary
The primary role is to support and assist the Manager of the Infection Prevention Unit with strategic and operational activities, in overseeing the local Infection Prevention programs across all Peter Mac campuses.
Support the provision of specialist advice regarding IP matters, and support the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standard - Preventing and Controlling Healthcare Associated Infections across PMCC services.
Essential to this role is the ability to work with multi-disciplinary teams within the organisation.

1. Surveillance of hospital associated infections including
- Undertakes investigations of incidents within or related to the IPAC service and provides timely reports against actions to minimise further events or risks
- Addresses practices that are not consistent with agreed standards, practice guidelines and evidenced based practice
2. Data Analysis and reporting
- VICNISS reporting MRSA, VRE, C.diff, SSI, CLIP, Hand hygiene (National) & Occupational exposures monthly
- Quarterly VICNISS and KPI reports to Infection Prevention Committee and Quality Committees Analysis of the annual health care worker influenza program.
- Employs the skills of timely and effective communication with healthcare personnel and teams to guide and achieve optimal patient/ performance outcomes.
- Prepare Reports for Executive and Board Quality
- Provide ad hoc reports as required
3. Continual professional development
- Ensures compliance with mandatory training requirements specified by Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre
4. Teaching and research
- Evidence of leading or actively participating in research or quality improvement projects.
- Plans and delivers orientation requirements for new staff including Medical and Nursing. Nursing staff on a monthly basis and medical staff 4 times per year.
- Education of staff at a formal and informal level through in-services, planned education to the Parkville and other campuses.
5. Quality Improvement
- Provide expert advice based upon evidence based practice, legislation, standards and guidelines and benchmarking against other recognised levels of national and international practice
- Initiate, support and participate in Quality Improvement activities with the aim for improvement in patient outcomes
- Promotes a culture of continuous improvement within the unit by monitoring standards of service and practice and leads the team to ensure that interventions are designed and implemented to address areas where variance to the agreed standards exists.
- Contributes to the development and review of policy, procedure and clinical practice guidelines.
- Work effectively with Consumers in developing, implementing and evaluating services
6. Other Duties
- Assists in the annual influenza program planning and staffing including timetable and organising site visits.
- Assists with vaccination of staff, patients and carers
- Co-ordination of Occupational Exposure care
- Other duties as directed
