AQWA’s Ocean Guides play a pivotal role in achieving our mission of creating wonder and respect for the marine life and environment of WA, by interacting with visitors in a fun and engaging way.

Above all else, our Ocean Guides must be friendly and motivated to confidently engage with the public, sharing their knowledge to help each and every visitor have an enjoyable experience at AQWA. This in turn is hoped to inspire that visitors’ own curiosity and connection with the marine world and foster a respect for and desire to protect it.You'll play a crucial part in building and maintaining systems for our world-class displays of coral, fish, and other marine life.
Reporting directly to the Education Manager, you'll work alongside a dedicated team passionate about the marine environment.
Your role will involve:
- Interacting with visitors in both casual engagements, scripted presentations, workshops and guided tours.
- Running interactive education programs for the public as well as school and vacation groups (including scripted talks, science experiments, hands-on activities).
- Conducting additional visitor experiences such as Behind the Scenes tours, Glass Bottom Boat tours and Birthday Parties.
- Feeding marine life during presentations and tours.
- Maintaining presence on the aquarium floor and being an approachable, helpful ‘front of house’ staff member for customers.
- Ensuring aquarium exhibit areas are correctly set up/ closed down and that a high level presentation (clean, safe, secure, operating correctly) is maintained throughout your shift.
- Answering questions, providing assistance as required and delivering exceptional levels of customer service.
- Learn and disseminate information on the marine environment, its inhabitants and AQWA’s exhibits on an ongoing basis.
- Ensure the security, health and safety of AQWA visitors, employees and animals at all times.
- Adhering to all AQWA company policies and procedures and all regulatory requirements
Essential Criteria:
- Experience in presenting information in fun and entertaining ways to people of all ages and backgrounds.
- Lively and enthusiastic personality.
- Exceptional communication skills.
- Professional personal presentation at all times.
- Ability to learn and disseminate information quickly.
- Ability to work to deadlines and adhere strictly to Guides presentation schedule.
- Good working knowledge of workplace and occupational health and safety.
- Keen interest in and passion for the marine environment
- Availability to work at least alternate weekends (both Saturday and Sunday); some weekdays and Public Holidays as rostered throughout the year, including and in particular, during school holidays and other busy trading periods.
Desirable Criteria:
- Qualification in the field of Marine Science
- Previous experience presenting information to the public.
- Experience working in a busy tourist operation environment
