Job description

The Bureau's National Observing Operations section manages several Meteorological Offices located in remote locations such as Antarctica and Sub Antarctic including, Macquarie Island, Mawson, Casey and Davis, along with Willis Island, Giles, Lord Howe Island, Norfolk Island and other staffed stations.

The Remote Operations Leads will have up to 22 direct reports, and manage staff based at these unique locations and be responsible for staff well-being and pastoral care whilst staff are deployed. They will also oversee the recruitment, training provision and logistics associated with staffing and maintaining these sites.

The Remote Stations have staff change over every 4 months to 12 months, depending on the site, recruited from inside and outside of the Bureau. The Remote Operations Leads will review and manage station rosters working with Schedulers on assigning work orders to staff on station for maintenance and operations based on service priorities.

The Remote Operations Leads will closely liaise with other staff from National Observing Operations Hubs to ensure that remote staff are fully supported technically to operate and maintain equipment at all Remote Stations

There is the prospect of short-term opportunities to travel to Antarctica, as well as other parts of Australia such as Giles, Willis Island, Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island. It would be advantageous for the Remote Operations Lead to have previously worked remotely so they understand the unique challenges that staff located at remote locations encounter.

The Remote Operations Lead will have strong communication skills to support their remote team, negotiate and manage stakeholder relationships both internal and external to the Bureau, and to leverage emotional intelligence.

Several of the remote sites are located in External Territories so the Remote Operations Lead is responsible for ensuring that all Federal Government legislation is complied with in regard to Customs, Immigration and Biosecurity Laws when transferring staff and goods to and from the relevant remote location.
