Townsville Hospital and Health Service is the public healthcare provider for more than 250,000 people across a geographic area of 150,000km2, delivering a comprehensive range of services across 21 facilities, from primary care in regional locations to highly specialised care at the main hospital.
The Communicable Disease Control (CDC) Team in Townsville Public Health Unit (TPHU) is focused on surveillance, prevention and control of important infectious diseases and outbreaks, and ensuring children and adults are vaccinated.
As with all Townsville Public Health Unit staff, the position will be required to perform other appropriate duties as required, such as supporting vaccine service providers and CDC responses to outbreaks and disasters.
The Townsville Hospital and Health Service vision is world-class healthcare for northern Queensland. Our purpose is `great care every day'.
The Opportunity
This position provides an opportunity to learn all aspects of CDC including vaccination support services. Within that, the role supports the Indigenous Immunisation Outreach Service (‘Boots on the Ground') which finds and updates immunisation of disadvantaged Indigenous children. These have fallen behind or are unvaccinated due to complex family dysfunction. The objective is to link such children and families back into primary care and provide outstanding doses in the field when necessary. The outreach nurse normally works with an Indigenous health worker to trace and locate overdue children near Townsville.
There are plans to expand the ‘Boots' model to include other community outreach and promotion, such as management of skin infections and prevention of complications such as rheumatic heart disease.
