About the role
The Urban Forest Unit at Merri-bek Council is critical to the growth and delivery of a healthy urban forest for the benefit of the Merri-bek community. The Urban Forest Unit is a safety-centric, performance orientated team, with a focus on high quality outcomes via innovative and contemporary management practices. The key objectives of the Urban Forest Unit are:
- Provision of an attractive, diverse, healthy, and well-maintained urban forest.
- Protection of the urban forest through expert arboricultural advice.
- Management of the risk of injury and property damage associated with trees on Council land.
- Development, planning, and delivery, of strategic outcomes in Merri-bek Council’s Urban Forest Strategy.
- Planning, management, and efficient delivery, of urban forest establishment, maintenance, and renewal services.
The Planning Arborist is a new role that will be an integral part of the Urban Forest Unit. This position will report to the Unit Manager Urban Forest and will play a key role in protecting and enhancing the urban forest by mitigating unnecessary canopy loss on public and private land. The focus will be on the effective management of internal referrals where public and/or private trees may be affected, managing Tree Works Permit applications for pruning and removal of private trees, and providing tree related enforcement functions in relation to Council’s Planning Scheme and General Local Law. The role will form part of the Urban Forest Leadership Team and will work closely with key stakeholders across the organisation.
Skills and experience require to perform the role
- Completion of Australian Qualifications Framework Level 5 (Diploma) in Arboriculture with relevant work experience.
- Specialist knowledge of arboriculture, with particular emphasis on application of AS4970 – Protection of Trees on Development Sites.
- Knowledge of planning and related legislation and relevant local laws.
- Ability to read and interpret planning policy, landscape plans, construction plans and supporting documentation.
- Proficiency in the application of law enforcement procedures, including evidence collection and preparation of reports.
- Strong communication and customer service skills with ability to resolve complex problems.
- Computer literacy/proficiency in Microsoft Office and in accessing and using databases.
- Ability to work with a high level of initiative to meet changing demands and service delivery needs.
- A current Victorian Driver’s Licence.
