Responsibilities 

  • Shadowing and assisting lawyers and directors of the firm for client conferences, court appearances and drafting file notes and court reports for those appearances and conferences.
  • Drafting submissions for plea hearings and court diversions.
  • Updating and maintaining the firm’s calendar which includes obtaining the Magistrates Court excel spreadsheet with all the firms matters and reviewing dates for all our indictable matters through the County Court Connect Portal.
  • Maintaining and assisting the lawyers with the EFAS requests for all matters to be working at least two weeks in advance and in accordance with recent practice directions (e.g. requests 7 days prior).
  • Overseeing and checking all the firm’s client drop box files to ensure that they are up to date by cross referencing all communication online through the ****@burncitylegal.com.au email which you have access to. All correspondence in relation to any matter must and will be included to that email so it is essential that this email is monitored actively.
  • Maintaining file closing procedures ensuring client files are complete and liaising with solicitors with carriage of files on any missing documents – e.g. absence of cost agreement, trust receipt, final orders, etc.
  • Supporting legal teams and solicitors with decisions, strategies and procuring documents such as: character references for plea hearings;  surety, employer letter for bail applications.
  • Conducting legal research and offer analysis and interpretation of police briefs.
  • Preparing briefs, legal documents, reports and evidence.
  • Arranging the filing of documents. 
  • Scheduling appointments and coordinating meetings.
  • Attending to office duties to maintain the smooth running of the firm such as keeping a stock of stationery up-to-date, water for the fridge, banking cheques into the trust account, arranging postage of documents.
