Opportunity to make a real impact, shaping the future of NSW

About us

Transport for NSW keeps our State moving by providing safe, integrated and efficient transport systems. We put our customers at the centre of everything we do – and we do a lot. We connect people, communities and industry and manage how they use our road, rail and maritime networks and services, and even active modes like walking and cycling. The work we do connects the journeys you take every day.

We are a state government organisation made up of more than 28,000 people and we're in the middle of delivering the largest transport infrastructure program in Australia's history. We work across planning, policy and procurement, harnessing data and technology to develop smarter and more adaptive transport solutions.

That means job opportunities in metropolitan and regional areas right across NSW – you have the chance to be part of creating a lasting legacy that will benefit generations to come.

The Division

Transport’s Regional and Outer Metropolitan division’s purpose is to make regional and outer metropolitan NSW a better place to live, work and visit. Our division is made up of over 4,400 people in over 270 locations across NSW. We operate transport services and maintain our regional networks to help our regional communities and visitors stay safe and connected.

About the team

The Regional and Outer Metropolitan division is focused on understanding the particular needs of regional communities across NSW and delivering customer-centred integrated transport services and infrastructure.

Freight Branch is working to give freight a louder voice earlier by raising the profile of freight as a fundamental customer of the transport system to enable the safe, productive and sustainable movement of goods. We work in partnership across government and with industry to deliver improved freight outcomes for the people of NSW.

The Freight Policy and Regulatory Reform team leads a broad program of freight policy development and regulatory reform and will undertake research and provide industry expertise to support evidence-based policy decisions.

The opportunity

We have an ongoing full-time opportunity for a Policy Officer to join the Policy and Regulatory Reform team within the Freight Branch of the Regional and Outer Metropolitan Division.

In this role you will coordinate and undertake policy development, providing analysis and advice, to support the development of a range of policy initiatives and reforms related to the safe, efficient, and sustainable movement of goods on our network. This role will also contribute to the delivery of policy commitments that support organisational objectives and advocate for the interests for the communities of NSW.

What you will be involved in

Undertaking research and analysis, reviewing alternatives in relation to policy deliverables, to contribute to the policy process and to inform decision making.

Providing a range of project management and support services, including preparation of discussion papers, briefs and submissions, to contribute to the development and delivery of policy initiatives.

Preparing and reviewing policy advice to ensure alignment with policy directions.

Communicating with key stakeholders and coordinating working groups, committee meetings, and stakeholder consultations to support engagement as well as policy development and implementation.

Undertaking research and collating information for reporting, monitoring and evaluation purposes to contribute to the achievement of policy outcomes.

About you

Experience within a Policy role in government is desirable along with relevant tertiary qualifications. You have sound experience providing solutions to difficult issues through researching and analysing concepts, providing evidence-based arguments to justify the outcomes.

Crucial to your success in this role will be your excellent stakeholder management and written communication skills and your keen eye for detail.

You are a self-starter who is able to hit the ground running. You will be someone who thrives in a fast paced, complex environment, is able to confront and define policy problems, and also develop options with recommendations for a way forward.

You have worked in a team environment to meet tight deadlines and have a successful track record in providing advice of a high quality.

It is advantageous but not essential for good project management skills. We are open to further developing the skills and talent for the right candidate.

You're ready to take on a new challenge and work on interesting issues around Freight. It's time for your next role to play a meaningful role and positively impact the communities, economies and society of NSW.
